  1. I had it happen once - misplaced digit on a V5 (surprisingly common).
Bloke just rocked up, looked at it, said: "That's OK," and that was
    that.

Wildly, massively different. The V5 number's just 4 digits, the one on
    the frame's 12.

Sure. As long as you look after Pinkie & the cat too.

Does the frame number contain the four digits from the V5?

There's room in the shed for both of them so I'll be quite happy to do
    that for you.

Who cares? I'll chuck the pair of them in the shed and go and annoy
    German plod on the MV.

Could somebody have mis-read a part number or something else similar?

At least with the "original" VIN not actually looking anything like a VIN,
you're in with a good chance of convincing 'em it's clearly not a ringer.

No, it really is 'wildly, massively different'.
That shouldn't take much convincing, it's obviously not a case of
trying to make a stamped frame number match a V5.

  11. I had the same thing a few years ago, I bought a SO VT500 that turned
out to have been made from several boxes of bits, the VOSA sent a
young woman to look it over, after a very cursory look at the bike and
paperwork, and a few questions about where I bought it, she agreed to
let me use the reg. no that went with the frame rather than the one it
had on that went with the engine,a bit of a result, because the frame
was 1985 and the engine was 1983.

I've never been asked for one, car or bike, since the computer based system
arrived. That's in 5 different test centres.

My experience of the local DVLA in Brighton is they're pretty helpful and
are simply out for a quiet life i.e. they won't make unnecessary
    jobsworth work for themselves.

When I've registered/re-registered various elderly POS bikes they were
helpful and the inspections were just to check the numbers.

Admittedly that was over ten years ago.

Yes you can. There's a box on the V5.

The place I do like to see it the first time, particularly if it hasn't
had one for so long that it's not on the computer. That's mainly to save
them the faff of trying to find it on a grimy SO Italian bike though.

Nope, but taking the prev MOT helps to get it done quicker
Not that they need time as we have to sit and wait 10 mins to trick the
    computer into
thinking the MOT took the designated amount of time :)
