MOT and V5 are not the same.

Part of the test is to check the VIN (on post 1999 machines - so doesn't
    apply to SOBs)

Isn't there a points system whereby you have to have a certain
proportion of original parts to keep the same reg number?

Or does that just apply to parts of the same type, rather than from the
    same vehicle, I wonder.

Not a points system that I know of but there is a weighting based on
"major components" - frame, engine, transmission, suspension, wheels.

Talking of which. I'm sorely tempted to have a look at this on the way
to 'the chateau' next week, on the basis of making one good engine from
two and also amassing a lot of spare parts. Got to check the engine
number isn't in the 'bad big end bearings batch' range though.

    Ah, here's the clincher:

    "* motorcycles must use:

Unmodified frame (original or new) and two other major components from
the original vehicle; forks, wheels and engine or gear box.

If a second-hand frame is used the vehicle must pass a motorcycle single
vehicle approval (MSVA) test after which a 'Q' prefix registration
    number will be allocated."

So you can change the frame, but unless it's a brand new one you're
potentially looking at a Q plate.

  7. You live and learn. I've never seen that and until now, I'd have been
certain that what Champ said was right.

OK, then: I can't believe they don't do some checks or whatever,
otherwise ringing a bike would be even easier than it is already....

Unless you use the registration number allocated to the replacement
frame and just change the engine number on its V5. That seems to be the
most sensible way of doing things.

Except then you won't be using "two major components from the original
    vehicle".

It's not like DVLA will ever know or be able to prove otherwise. If you
don't tell them it's had a frame swop rather than an engine swop
they'll be none the wiser. People just make life very difficult for
themselves by going down the frame swop route when they can simply
change the engine number on the replacement frame and be done with it.
