[snip stuff about yank sportscars being "not all that"]

I've never driven one[1], but your opinion is in line with what I've
read. I wouldn't actually buy one of those pontiacs, just thing it's
    an unusual and attractive design.

    [1] well, I've driven a Chrysler Crossfire, but that's really a Merc.

better, but way more expensive than when I was last in the US
    (admittedly 6 years ago now).

  6. But they are relatively economical, relative to American cars.

I had a V6 Nissan Altima. 2.5l engine. I got 19 miles to the gallon out
of it. Work colleagues were amazed, people are buying them in flocks
    because they're *so* economical.

My boss recently bought his wife a GMC Yukon, and she doesn't quite get
10 miles out of a gallon.

The Dodge RAM (5.7 V8 Hemi) I had in Canada a couple of years back had
an average of around 15l/100km on its trip computer, IIRC. Around
19mp(UK)g, and that was including leaving the engine running for 15
minutes each morning and evening. Quoted figures are 15 and 20mp(US)g
for city and highway driving respectively.

All of which I find perfectly acceptable for a 350hp 3 ton truck.

    That they are.
Heck, I can get that out of my wife's Jeep Cherokee. As long as I'm not
driving that in town and ain't driving like a twat.

  12. Ridiculously common and considered reasonably "normal". The XL version
    less so.

Agreed - in a building of 800 people, I reckon there's two doze on our
car park, plus may more in between that size ad the size of a Range Rover.

One of my guys has a Chevy Suburban, essentially a Yukon in disguise.
He's single and driver 30 minutes each way to work in it.

It's worthless to sell, he can't afford anything less juice hungry but
the fuel costs are killing him. Catch 22 all round.

  14. Surely 1000 bucks spent on a used Jap small car would recoup the fuel
costs in a matter of weeks?

  15. ISTR the twats trying that before. It didn't work. It didn't even
    happen.

People were parking them in a remote spot, torching them and reporting
    them stolen.

  17. Cash flow situation. He couldn't afford to take the loss on his own car
    - because it's probably on finance (most cars bought here are), and he
doesn't have a grand plus insurance plus registration taxes etc to spare.

I almost feel for him, but hey, it was his choice to buy the fuel
guzzler, on finance that he could barely afford whilst not being willing
to make himself employable at more than $12 per hour.

My '87 Audi 5000 CS Quattro only cost me $750 and it's remarkably
easy on petrol ... 'cos it's not got any oil pressure anymore and
I want to keep it runnable still for a short while so I'll be able
to get it to the breakers without having to tow it ... oh, hang
    on, as you were.
