Black Swan - pretty damn good, the best Natalie Portman film since Leon.
Don't make the mistake of thinking it's a film about ballet. And it's
got Mila Kunis doing lesbian shit, which is always good.

The Social Network - outstanding, even if you're still an MSN user. If
Mark Zuckerberg is half as much as a dick as he's painted, he's the
world's biggest dick, and yet he can't help it. And who knew Timberlake
    could almost act?

True Grit - a good solid western. Though I find it hard to watch
westerns since I saw Rich Hall's How The West Was Lost. Jeff Bridges
does an amazing line in Authentic Frontier Gibberish (tm) and it's under
two hours long, which is quite an achievement in this day and age.

127 Hours - probably the best film I've seen in ages. Manages to take a
bloke stuck under a rock and turn it into an hour and a half of gripping
drama, even if you know what's going to happen. Mind you, I said the
same about Thirteen Days, during which I wondered whether the Cuban
Missile Crisis was going to turn into World War 3. [1] Anyway, the
climax is as gruesome as it could be (and I say that as someone who's
seen the Nicholas Berg video) and the ending is amazingly uplifting
considering someone's half a limb down and more than a bit thirsty.

Real Racks 4 - not exactly going to win an Oscar, but does exactly what
    it says on the tin.

All in all, a surprisingly good time for films.

    [1] It didn't. Who knew?

  2. Haven't seen the others, but really enjoyed this.

Oh, and The Kids Are All Right is pretty good, too.

    (Two long-haul flights: five movies)

    OK:

Made in Dagenham - lightweight but fun.

Never let me go - thought provoking and sad. Dystopian. The first half
    is better than the second.

Tamara Drewe: as Made in Dagenham (and not as good as the book)...

    My last couple were :

    Harry Brown - Not great
The Expendables - considering they put together one of the best action
casts possible, i'm surprised they managed to **** it up so
    comprehensively.
    heh, that's a whole other sorta review ... :)

Which bit of "Mila Kunis doing lesbian shit" did you have trouble
    parsing?

That aside, it was still quite good. I'm not big on psychological
thrillers, though when the nutty character is female I find that easier
    to relate to.

Dunno if I'd go that far. Best screenplay, maybe - Sorkin's overdue a
plaudit. But Fincher winning best film? Unlikely. It might be time for
Pixar to win the big one, or possibly a gong for Inception.

That scene lasts a few minutes, tops. It's mostly him coming to terms
with the situation, assessing what got him there, and then dealing with
it. But it's very, very well done. And really, the ending, absolute
    elation.

I'd have seen it by now if it weren't a matter of principle between me
and V. She's just seen it at a sold-out Barbican screening and reckoned
    it was excellent.

Black Swan is probably very good but I doubt if I'll watch it, The
Social Network isn't really my sort of film, True Grit should have
John Wayne in it and 127 Hour's I'll probably make some kind of an
effort to watch because it could be amusing.

I'll almost certainly be going to see Sanctum because it's a bit close
to the mark when it comes to things that I used to do for a laugh.

My sentiments on both of them exactly. Although I had something of
the same expectations as Champ re: the latter, I was hoping against
hope that it would turn out better. And the former was really nothing
more than a fairly inoffensive remake of Death Wish, of course.

I am guessing they aren't reviewing the lastest offerings from Givi, Ventura
    and Gearsack.

  11. I thought Black Swan was the most over-rated film ever. How it cracked the
imdb top 250 is beyond me. Even the lezzo scene couldn't save it for me.

True grit definitely a solid western. I'm not a huge fan of the genre but it
    was ok.

127 hours was brilliant. I agree with everything you said. But I think Danny
    Boyle is a genius.

Social Network was pretty good. It is amusing to see he is still in court
    after settling.

I saw Frost/Nixon last night. A few years old but well worth a watch. Tron 2
is not bad but see it in 3d in a cinema and freak out at the young Jeff
    Bridges.

  12. Not insubstantial - just, well, lots of sort of cameo roles by actors
you vaguely recognised and Bob Hoskins playing Bob Hoskins. I was narked
by the fact that they got the cars wrong - you didn't have Ford Capris
    in 1966, for example.

I'll defintely watch 127 Hours when it comes onto BT Vision, but I
won't go out of my way to see the others, pretty much for exactly the
    same reasons.

I knew some pedant would pop up with that. Git

Yes. Not sure when Mark Two Cortinas and the similar-looking Hillman
Hunter came out, either. They were all in the film at one point or
    another.

    <Googles>

Hm. 1966 for both, so OK.

You didn't have the Ford equal pay strike in 1966 either, that was 1968.
