First Bike

    Hey,

    You probably get this question all the time, but what first bike do you
    suggest for someone who's probably going to spend a bit of time on the
    highways and is an 80Kg 6ft male? At the moment I'm leaning towards a ZZR.

    I guess it depends on how much you've got to spend but i suggest you buy
    something up to 650cc (learner legal in nsw) so you won't need to upgrade
    too soon. One bike that has really took my fancy is the new Suzuki V-STROM
    650. It's a smaller engined version of the 1000 V-Strom but with the same
    frame. Good value at $9,990 + onroads but unfortunately i think it's outside
    the learner legal. If you're already licenced then you've got no problem.

    and, if the OP is in NSW, he'd be entitled to bore it out to 660cc and
    still be OK.

    What are the chances of being caught if your riding the 1000?

    Might as well get that one, then.......

    Perhaps add nitrous and a turbo?

    I know my luck better than most and I'd say I'd be caught within the first
    week.

    It's written on the rego label whether the bike is LAM (learner allowed
    motorcycles) and it's all got to do with power over weight ratio. If you get
    pulled up by the cops just for the smallest thing and your licence doesn't
    match up....you might be spending some serious money to the cops club.
    Besides, from the reveiws with the V-strom 650 against the 1000, due to the
    18kg difference in weight, the 650 is more preferable. I just wished the RTA
    would update their Learner legal motorcycle info more often, last time was
    Nov 2004.

    Vstrom 650, SV650 and Cagiva Raptor 650 which all share the same motor
    do not meet the LAMs regulations for power to weight in NSW.

    Ducati do a restricted version of the monster 600, they MAY do their
    big chookie with that motor (DL is it ?) - could be worth checking. The
    BMW F650 and Aprilia Pegaso are big chookies and on the list.

    The full LAMs list is on the RTA website ( http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au )
    - there's a fairly long list of bikes to choose from now.

    Assuming the original poster is in NSW, would suggest he also look at
    GS500, VTR250 and ER5 as very suitable for the bigger rider (in my
    opinion for the very little that's worth). ZZR is a good bike, nothing
    wrong with and entirely learner suitable friendly.

    *shrug* There's a lot worse. Read the 250cc bikes list at
    http://250ccbikes.com/ . The GPX250 is basically the same thing
    but cheaper, uglier and lighter.

    I tend to encourage folks to go for twin-cylinder 4-stroke 'standards'
    naked or bikini-fairinged, mostly because they're very versatile.

    If your state allows LAMs, there's even more to choose from. Where you
    from?

    to weight like the ACT.

    wouldn't surprise me.

    A power to weight ratio would probably allow Leadwings too......

    It would me. Big twin harleys make it, I think the ST1100's got more go
    and less pork... And so does the ACT. It's not on the list.

    My 180cc scooter isn't learner legal in the ACT it appears...
    Nope.

    DOes allow VT1100s though. And what the hell is a VTR1100?
