  2. Could have been faster with the clutch, perhaps? (Old two-stroke
    racer paranoia...) Any diagnosis yet?

  6. Pictures I saw later looked like electrical failure -- the starter

Nick, thanks again for meeting me in Folkestone and giving that nice left
side driving lesson before joining onto the M20. I really gave me
confidence, I enjoyed it very much to follow you, Sean and Whinging Courier
    up the Motorway.

I did try to escape very early, mainly to avoid your breakfast (...), but
that was ruined when I had to come back again since I forgot things. So I
had breakfast, but ran off quite fast after that.
Sorry I did not wait to see you again, but I hoped that an early start would
give me a dry run - which it did in the end.
I did not miss any junctions on the way, I even managed to take the Dartford
Bridge instead of the Tunnel for a nice view.
On the french side, I had to take out the sun visor for being dazzled by
bright sunshine in a clear blue sky and around 15°.

I was home at 19:30, I left at around 10:30 (It was around 9:30, time
corrected +1 for CEST). I took me almost exactly 9h to make it home.
Accounting for the Eurotunnel check in, which took around 45 mins, and the
travel time of 35 mins, I drove for 7h and 40 mins. (*1)
Total distance home -> Derby -> home was 1.580 km (*1), or just shy of 1.000
    miles.
I added up all fuel bills now, too. Total fuel burnt was 85l, or 18,69 imp
    gallon (of 4.546l)

The bike consumed around 5.4l / 100km (*2) - that is quite good. Yes, we use
l / 100km, since we buy fuel in l and travel in km. For you, that is
    53,something mpg. (*3)
How do you figure that out? You do not have gallons listed on the fuel pump,
so you always make that divided by 4.546 to get gallons and then do the
miles by that? Strange folk you are....

    Cheers!
    Ralf

(*1) Uhhh, yes, that gives an average speed for the way back of 103 km/h, or
65 mph. Well beyond the limit... not accounting for the fuel and relax stops
I made, the 30 miles in Derby to the highway, my fight with the air pump at
the filling station (rant!) and the major roadworks on the M1. The final bit
on the M20 I was not very often below 100 mph... So I am waiting for the
postman to deliver some "NIP", as you call them, or some french equivalent
of that (I do not remember being flashed or overtacking an unmarked car, but
    you never know...)

(*2) Even more impressive if you take into account the fairly high cruising
speed. On the way there, Sean, Nick and myself went at around 85-95 mph
mostly, too. Still the overall comes to fairly small number. Not bad for an
old engine with carbs and such.

(*3) Anyway, if you want to convert l/100km into mpg and back, that is
    fairly easy. Multiplied, they always must give 282,5. 5.4 * 53,xx = 282.5.
So to get from one to the other, divide 282,5 by one and the result is the
    other...

Yes, they are. Then again, it's much easier to work with mpg, or even
km/l, than the other way round. the l/100km makes it very difficult to
work out how much fuel you need for a journey, or part thereof.
Right, thanks for that, it makes it all so simple.

    That's pretty impressive actually.

Maybe you should organise some sort of German get together and see if
anyone goes the other way? :)

One question though - did you do it all on motorways?

We can always meet at the Nurbürgring!
Yes, except for the very last 30 miles from M1 jct. 25 to the Black Horse,
and some 10 km from my junction of the Autobahn to home. (both these twice,
    of course).

If I am to repeat that, and the weather allows it, I will take Friday and
Monday off, and do the english side with "Motorway prohibited" punched into
the nav system, or at least the North-of-London to Derby bit on scenic
    routes.
