    Gday,

I have been looking around for a while now to get a judge of the market. I
was thinking of a '95 FZR250 or CBR250R but I cant seem to find anything in
my price range ($3500). I am trying to not go crazy and buy something above
the red book standard... can anyone recommend a local
retailer/wrecker/seller that i should try? I have obviously tried all the
major places just to be ignored, laughed at, or be overwhelmed by price.

Are there any other bikes I should consider?

    Cheers!

    Nigel in Adelaide.

You obviously haven't judged the market very well if, after studying it,
you've chosen a bike and set a maximum price which is less than that for which
    the bike is commonly available.

Both those models hold their value extrememly well (for that matter all
sport 250s do, FZR, CBR, ZXR etc). You would be lucky to get a 90 model for
that price let alone a 95. The good news is if you do shell out that much
you will probably get it all back again when you go to sell it.

I would suggest either saving the $$ for a bit longer, looking for an early
90s model instead or looking for a different bike. Across, GPX, ZZR would be
more in that price range. Or if you want to live dangerously you should be
able to find a 2 stroke like an RGV250 for that money quite easily.

I actually sold my CBR250RR with slight fairing damage for more than I bought it for (w/o damage).

Does it have to be a 250 ?? Does it have to be a road bike ?
I'd suggest increasing your range and include other bikes....like a
Kwaka BR250, Yammy SRX 250 or Honda CBX250 (maybe even an XL185) all
very good bikes especially for a learner.

Once your a bit more experienced then go for a FZR/CBR etc etc

    just my 2c worth

Im not sure if the original poster mentioned where he is from, but in NSW
the RGV250 is not learner legal.

.... he says, listing a bunch of road 250s.
But I agree with him (except maybe the XL185) in that rather than
trying to buy an Underpants Gnome, you'd be better off buying
a Hack, and punting that around for a year or so.

Check the insurance prices second. Sit down first.

I bought a mid `90's ZZR250 this morning for $3000 (not including on road
costs). It has slight fairing damage on one side (what 250 doesnt), but
other than that it is in great condition.

And yes, you are going to have a hard time finding a CBR/FZR in that price
range, unless its buggered or you are lucky. You'll have to add at least
another $1000 to that from what i have seen.

$4.5 Million seems a little steep for a 250. Has it got a big bore kit and
    decent tyres?

I think so - especially in places like Canberra and Hobart, where lots of
people aren't real keen on riding in winter.
