FJ 900?!?

    Hi everyone,
    A friend of mine is offering to give me her Yamaha FJ 900 which is sitting
    around in need of repairs in England. Thing is, I can't find anything about
    the 900, least of all a nice Haynes manual for it. What's going on? Has it
    been mistaken for a 600? I'm sure she wouldn't have got this wrong.
    Perhaps a big bore?

  2. If it's an FJ, its either an 1100 or 1200
    If it's a 900 it's an XJ, which came in 600(only chain driven XJ), 750 and
    900

    I'd say its an XJ900 you're looking at. Talk to Clem.

    Nope, it can be a 600.

    I rode one in Canada.

    And just to confuse matters the Excessive Eleven was called the XJ1100 in
    some markets at the end of it's model run.

    Okay, thanks. That's something to go on, and I'll have to make sure my
    friend wasn't just being ditsy at the time.

    BTW, I love countersteering and have heard enough times you can't on a
    shafty - how much will I miss it?

    And I was so busy crapping on about the XJ1100 that I didn't notice that
    you'd missed the father of them all; the XJ650.

    (and it just occurred to me that the XJ900F came in a few year model
    designations so one of them may have been a "J")
    (A google for Yamaha FJ900 brings up so many hits that I'm starting to
    believe that some versions of the XJ were called FJ in Japan and parts of
    Europe)

    Oh, you'll be fine in the NORTHERN hemisphere! It's only below the
    equator that you get problems, it's because the coriolis effect
    cancels the counter-steering moment of force.

    All of the problems we have with non-counter-steering shafties could
    be solved by simply running the engine in the opposite direction, but
    then you'd have to change the camshafts, ignition system, etc.

    ....or just interchanging the sprockets, big one up front.
    ....or turn the ignition key the other way...
    ....mount the handlebars to the packrack, go backwards...
    ....punch a hole in the alternator cover and mount the chain/sprockets on the
    other side
    ....oh shit, just f&^%ed myself, this was about shafties, eh?

    Nah, you just put the tubes on the *outside*, silly!

    (That also gives you a lot better mileage out of the tyres).
