I have been looking at this item for a while. I had previously bid on it and
was immediately outbid, no worries there. But it has been sitting for a
while and \i bid a bit higher and all of a sudden I have been outbid by a
bidder that had never existed in the prior bid history. How does that
    happen??
I smell a rat, but I'm not really bothered because I'm not too worries about
    wining the item.
My faith in ebay has become seriously diluted over the last few months.

I get this a heck of a lot, no interest in the item and no bids for 5 days,
I put in a small bid with 2 days to go and wham within seconds I'm outbid...
at this point, I walk away.

The current top bidder, the username that appears as l***d, with 528
feedback - that's the one, right? That is a 'proxy bid', made on 30th
March. That user has bid more than you, and will continue to
automatically outbid you by one bid increment until you overtop their
    bid figure.

That's how it has always worked.

OP needs to click the "show automatic bids" tab to see the automated
    increments by l***d

That's how I thought it always worked, but what I find unusual is that prior
to my 2nd bid that bidder had made no bids at all.
Shirley if his/her bid was higher than mine in the first place (and my bid
is very low in reality!) how come they haven't shown up in the bidding list
    before?

As Wessie explained, you need to click "Show automatic bids" and all
will be revealed. If you look on the bid history page, the automatic
bids link is immediately to the left of the little picture of the carb.

  9. So he placed a large proxy bid after your second bid.
