Flappy mirrors

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Mungo \Two Sheds\ Toadfoot, Dec 9, 2006.

  1. The Viagra has a floppy left mirror. There is, in the part that screws into
the handlebar, a 10mm nut that looks like it wants tightening but it's
recessed and none of my 10mm tools will fit down the hole.

Is there a special very thin-walled 10mm socket/box spanner available for
such things or do I have to grind down a socket on the grinder I haven't
    got?

A set of good old fashioned box/tube spanners has got me out of trouble
a few times. I know nothing about the machine in question so can't
picture just how little clearance there is. Not meant to be captive and
you just twist the mirror stalk is it? Or is it one of those add-on jobs
with an expanding system thrust up the end of the handlebar?

  3. This is the mounting:

Less room than I need to get a socket down there.
Possibly; the top of the threaded part is burred over so the nut won't come
off. I'll try wedging a screwdriver down the side of it to turn the nut
    whilst turning the mirror.

Not a lot is there. Not sure even a box spanner would work. A really
pikey cheap thin walled one might with a bit of Birmingham screwdriver
    persuasion.
Ah, I see your problem. A die or die nut of the correct thread would
come in handy (if you had such a thing). How much damaged thread
exposed? Enough to try re-tightening the present one (if it will move)
and trying to start a new one on to clean up the thread a bit (with
lashings of plusgas naturally). A bit too small a thread to try cleaning
up with a needle/lock-makers file probably. You need the other 'white
hat'. Pip would have an idea I am sure.

I jammed two small scewdrivers down a similar hole in the Zed's right mirror
and turned the mirror stem. The nut isn't to "lock" the stem in place, just
to give it more friction but still allow it to move if it gets clobbered, so
the two screwdriver thing did that and I could adjust the mirror normally
    after it'd been re-fitted.

1/4" drive socket, or as you say, a small old-fashioned box spanner.
Failing that, if the wedging of scredrivers is insufficient, a bit of
tappage with a centre punch in the right direction. The top of the
tread is easily deburred with a Dremel.

  7. Thanks. And to Pip and Pete. It's always the stupid things like this that
frustrate me. Cleaning all the crap out of the carbs was a piece of weewee
but being unable to tighten one nut due to poor design really winds me up!

cant you just use some loktite?
it does wonders for the mirrors on my chopper, which virbiate loose
otherwise, no matter how hard i try to tighten them.
But loktit does the trick... just try to get some between the 'moving'
    parts.

  9. I might do, or just buy some new ones. I've tried everything to tighten the
fucker but I think the thread's knackered and I've also just noticed that
the "skirt" part that the nut and bolt tighten through is cracked so it's
just going to open up as it tightens anyway! I'll give Loctite a go next.

Use Loc-Tite and you lose the ability to adjust the mirrors forever.

I've tried everything to tighten the
Get your hand in your pocket and pull out the required number of bills and
buy a new or even 2nd hand fucking mirror ffs. They're not THAT expensive
and they CAN save your life.

I'll give Loctite a go next.

If you're DEFINITELY going to go down that route, get Loc-Tite 270. It's
    red.

You could try using PTFE tape on the threads. They sound as if you'll
have to replace the mirror eventually but taping the thread might make
    it useable for now.
