Typical of the AA to be against it. They really are a bunch of cunts.

"The road safety charity Brake has also condemned the plans."

    In that case, I'm 100% in favour.[1]

[1] I'm 100% in favour anyway, but YKWIM.

"The idea that drunks and young [reckless] drivers are going to get to
the flashing lights after midnight and say 'after you' is nonsense."

Like, of course, a red light would stop them, right?
    Indeed.

All the "against" comments seem to be that it would confuse drivers.
If so, only for the first time IWHT. The fact that it works extremely
well in other countries seems to escape their attention.

They may be more likely to stop for a red light, but the vast majority
of junctions don't have any lights, & funnily enough they don't seem to
be littered with bits of smashed up car every morning.

I fully expect an British implementation of this idea will involve
considerable more crazy-golf style infrastructure than we're expecting -
after all traffic engineers have to make a living.

So not flashing amber lights as such, but you can only proceed when the
path through the rotating blades of the windmill is clear - that kind
    of thing?

Quite. And whilst we're about it why not do like the Yanks do and
allow people to turn left on a red light? It seemed to work pretty
well on the few occasions I've visited the States. Having said that,
perhaps I've only driven in places that seem to have reasonably
civilised drivers when I've been out there. Drivers in Vegas seem to
be very well mannered. I can't see the average British driver being
    half so courteous.

Yep, with extra flashing lights, digital message boards, environmental
sensors, paint, railings and signage, and roadworks for 6 months.

It works well on every occassion I've been there. I like it.
The places I've been have mostly had chilled out drivers.
You think they'd just pull out anyway? Yeah, maybe.

I noticed it particularly when walking to the local supermarket.
People let you cross over entrances to carparks, can't say I've ever
noticed that level of courtesy in the UK.

They're probably just astonished to see anyone walking at all.

I do that - if I'm on my way out of the car park and not stuck on the
road, with a good chance of being rear-ended. I let pedestrians cross
in front of me when it's raining, too. I wouldn't want to be out in
the rain, but I've got a tin roof over me - so they can go on their way.

Theoretically at a major-road minor-road junction, any vehicle has to
give way to pedestrians crossing the minor road.

Ah, but remarkably few people know that.

Actually, most people know ****-all about the rules of the road. Ask in
the average pub what the NSL is on a single-carriageway road with no
street lights, and a divided dual-carriageway. It's quite interesting to
    see the spread of responses.

Yes and so do I, but they were doing it on the way into the car park
too. And they let you cross right over the dual carriageway (on a
pedestrian crossing of course) before moving off. In the UK you'd be
lucky to make it to the central reservation if the green man has changed
to flashing. I got bollocked by a traffic cop near San Francisco once
because I turned right on a red and there was someone crossing. IIRC
they were on the other lane of the dual carriageway because I didn't
even see them. Fortunately my abject grovelling and pleading of
foreigner status got me off the hook.

  19. Well actually a red light would stop them, or some of them at least. Where
does the race start from if not the red light as it turns green? Be hard
pushed to have your jollies if the bastards took away the go signal. Which
is an interesting irony, using the marks set by Them to signal the limits
of their disregard for the system.

  20. That, and it's only a TRIAL that's been proposed. Just imagine where
we'd be now if no-one had ever conducted an experiment. Bloody people.
Take a chance, you only live once, etc.
