At a fairly decent rate of knots...how long should I allow for me plus
throwovers and tailpack etc on the Gixer? I'm catching a ferry or
catamaran to Malta from Naples/Salerno next August and want to start
    initial planning now.

1284.5 miles. If your arse is up to it, 2 days easily, bearing in mind
how quickly one can 'make progress' in Italy. I'd plan on 3 days
meself, just to take the sting out of it. I did Zurich to Swindon in 1
day on the MV, which is a little over half your distance, & I wouldn't
have fancied repeating it the following day.

    Champ says...
I was thinking moderately committed, but fun, and seeing the countries
to the side of the roads, rather than just a never ending and fast
approaching strip of tarmac in front me.

Krusty emerged from their own little world to say
Similarly, I did Geneva to S Wales in 14 hours inc. a 1 hour wait for a
ferry at Calais. About 700 miles. Like Krusty, I wouldn't fancy doing it 2
    days running.

So, 1 overnight stop near the France/Italy border if you want to feel like
    shit.

2 overnight stops and you can enjoy some Alpine passes rather than taking
the tunnels. Although, in August, the tunnels are sometimes a welcome
    relief from the heat.

However, whilst you are there, take a few extra days to enjoy the roads &
scenery. Otherwise, you'd just as well save your cash and Easyjet it.

Two days if you're taking in a bit of scenery on the way and having a
    smoke every fuel stop.
