I need a new laptop bag. The one I have is super-small, so the laptop
*just* fits in it, and there's a front pocket, which barely holds a
power supply, iPod, digicam, iPaq, noise-cancelling headphones, travel
document wallet and a packet of gum.

This also occurs at Crown Point in Tobago, even when you do land it
looks like you have landed on the beach.

Jackie emerged from their own little world to say
Flying in to Cardiff (well Rhoose) from the west is odd. The descent is
over the Bristol Channel straight towards Weston. Then the plan has to turn
through about 120 degrees port to align with the runway which is only 500m
or so from the coast. I quite enjoyed the experience but some of the people
on the port side seemed unnerved by the steep turn.

  5. Knowledge is power - have a few flying lessons. That'll sort you out, I
    reckon.

Aversion therapy worked for me with my irrational fear of spiders - I
bought a cruddy old victorian house full of the hairy eight-legged
buggers and they're such a common sight that I had no choice but to get
used to them as I can't afford to move house again.

  6. Heh. There was a story in the spanish press the other day about a
Monarch plane (bound for Manchester) that had to return to Málaga after
dumping it's fuel because one engine caught fire.

Half the passengers refused alternative tickets from Monarch - even
though the emergency procedures worked perfectly well (ie; noone died)
and they flew with other (obviously much safer) airlines. The other half
took trains home and said they would never fly again.

Fly Monarch. At least you know the fire extinguishers work.

  7. ISTR they landed at something like 30 knots, didn't they?

In even moderate winds you could actually fly backwards.

Dealing with Germans it's a potentially sensitive area- especially
people from Munich... I didn't want to cause any potential offense.

Get a Tumi back pack, lots of pockets and plenty of storage space.

    I've flown on a JU52 :)

Even sat in the cockpit - very very noisy, but enjoyable.

Heh! that would have done it!

Still they were from Munich and don't trust the Dusseldorfers because
they drink strange beer so they'd probably agree.

The deadpan reference on the BA safety video which says "in the event
that the plane lands on water ...." always makes me laugh. If something
happens at 37,000 feet it is very unlikely you'll be landing on water -
well not in one piece anyway.

  14. I've flown monarch when the fire alarm went off in the baggage hold,
false alarm but the landing back at Gatwick 15 minutes after leaving
was like the thunderbirds scenes with the emergency vehicles
paralleling the plane. We thne spent 90 minutes or so sitting there
whilst monarch tried to figure out what to do next.

  15. Remember that Helios Airways plane that crashed into the Greek mountains
a couple of months back because the passengers and crew were poisoned by
    the AC system?

A bunch of 40 or so Irish football fans refused to fly Helios out of
Crete last week when the crate they were on had to turn back. Helios
said engine trouble, the fans said everybody was falling asleep (oops).
Might have been, indeed probably was, drink; but a second attempt failed
    too.

They eventually got back home by BA, afair, and Aer Lingus.

  16. Yeah; they always fail to mention that landing on water at any speed
above walking pace is just like hitting concrete.

Hmm. I've spent the last 10 years skirting around any potential
references to the second world war.

My mother's Rallye would do a 49 kt approach for a short field landing, then
30 deg of flap, throttle closed and stick right back for the flare. The
auto-slats would bang out, and we'd bump onto the end of the runway at what
seemed like a walking pace. As soon as the nosewheel was down, she'd stand
on the brakes, and we'd take the first exit, where everyone else was lining
    up for departure...
If your stall speed is, say, 40 kts, then into a 40 kt wind you'd be
stationary WRT the ground. To go backwards, you'd need more than 40 kts of
    wind.

Experienced that coming into Biggin, on my second or third lesson. It
just sat about a hundred feet above the road, until I was instructed
to use a little more throttle, with rather more urgency than I thought
    necessary.
