  1. One of our offices has been given the day off there, due to the power
    cut. Lucky buggers.

I love a good thunderstorm, too.

Some years ago, at a friend's gaff in Norfok, we watched this incredible
cloud front advance across a clear sky. It was almost cartoon-like, the
edge of it was so well-defined and straight.

And then the lightning started. Best thunderstorm I can recall.

At one point, I felt I had to test a theory, so I went out into the
middle of the lawn, pointed up at the sky dramatically, and shouted:
    "There is no God!"

Sounds like my trip down to WavyDavy's earlier this year, in about 30
seconds the whole sky transitioned from daylight to darkness, as the
    heavens opened.

I snapped the begining of it, whilst driving. :)

  5. Both Met & Piccadilly were closed because of the wrong kind of tree
on the line (more accurately for the Pic at Hillingdon, on the train).

Very wierd effect on my security cam today -- it looks like the
lawn and path and bits of the house are wobbling in a nearthquake. I
presume the camera was being blown about so much that there was some
relative movement twixt lens and CCD sensor. The hedge is moving everywhere
too, but I mask it off for porpoises of motion detection.

  6. I had that effect quite strongly in Untersiggenthal -- I used to
estimate the wind speeds quite accurately from the drop in the water
level. Elsewhere it seems to be more or less effectively dampened but the
flat in US was directly coupled to the wind flow somehow.

Definitely. While I was behind an obstruction (lorry having a sleep) today,
being knocked about by the winds (about 70-89mph), I saw a girl on a GSR 600
pop a quick wheelie into a gap on her side of the road and REALLY give it
    beans out of town.

Impressed I was, given the amount of debris flying all all around and the
number of wheelie bins taking unguided trips up the roads.

And as for the trains. London Bridge station closed completely,
Liverpool Street mostly closed, Victoria tube closed due to
overcrowding, every tube line shagged and a 'take what you can' out of
    Paddington.

And it *still* took me 20 minutes less to get home than yesterday.
Delays on FGW? Pull the other one...

Best place I've ever watched a thunderstorm is Bidborough Ridge,
overlooking Tonbridge. High enough that you're practically looking down
    on the lightning. Perfect.

    On Thu, 18 Jan 2007 18:49:24 +0000,
Three of us sat on tables in the puib garden this Summer, watching the
progress of a not-very-far-away storm. Black dark it was, just over
the hill. Stalks of lightning marched like silver Ents, or Martian
war machines along the ridge. We'd get the thunderclaps five seconds
later. About a mile they marched, then there was a pall of smoke that
went up as a house in the next town was destroyed. We watched them
out of sight, then went in for anotehr pint as the sirens became
    audible.
Apart from the sheet lightning experience froma caravan on top of a
hill in Wales, that was mine. Much less scary, though.
... and your hair's been like that ever since?

And rather unpleasant that was. Took me three hours on the train to get
from Cannon Street to Ashford. All Eurostars cancelled, too...

That said, I somehow wasn't too miffed that I wasn't on a bike today.

How come I find out more about what's going on on here ? ;)

We get some crackers here. I assume the storms roll up the Usk Valley from
the Bristol Channel. When they get here they seem to get trapped by the
Skirrid mountain wherupon all hell breaks loose. Great view from my
    bedroom.

Just watching the news, bloody impressive shot of a plane taking off at
Birmingham, and as soon as the wheels left the runway, the pilot turned
the plane nose into the wind and took off sideways.

Good job he wasn't landing it ...
