  1. The Dover WX station was the only one I found recording gusts
higher than LHR & Northolt, and then only by 1 mph, at 78 mph.

  2. I saw that one flight from LA was diverted.
Looks like the Web _can_ tell the truth at times.

  3. It's because the Sarf is closer to the Equator, of course. Coriolis forces,
    and all that.

I've seen the low water level before, but not thought anything of it. I
haven't seen waves before though. That could be because my attention is
usually firmly fixed on the ingredients list on the back of the nearest
    plastic bottle or aerosol[1].

[1] I really hope I spelled that right.

I couldn't help it. I even spelled 'phenomenon' with an 'm' on the end
to start with, because it fit the tune better, then couldn't work out
why the spell-checker was complaining about it.

Adie banged the rocks together and they said :
M1 closed J18 to K19. And southbound traffic backed upto J20.
    Northbound backed upto J15A.

All traffic being diverted off and onto the A5, which was just moving
    southbound, but standing still northbound.

I was glad I was heading home, southbound.

I grew up in a house that looked over the North Sea. There was
nothing between the sea and the house except half a mile of flat
grass, and the lazy (couldn't be bothered to blow around you, it'd
blow straight through you) easterly gales battered the house regularly
all through the Winter. Mind you, we had Proper Winters then - I have
some old pics somewhere showing the front wall of the house shining
whitely due to being covered in crystallised salt and on other
occasions gleaming through a sheath of ice, created when the rain
flung at the front wall froze on contact.

Anyway - you get the picture.

The soil vent pipe stuck up some distance from the level of the gutter
(I remember this, as once I'd got to about 14 it was my annual task to
coat the fucker in another layer of black gloss and then work my way
around the edges of the roof painting the snow-retaining woodwork
while lashed to the chimney) and the wind would moan and howl through
the bird mesh on the top of it.

The suction would remove water from the U-bend in the bog down to the
top of the exit pipe and then the sounds emanting from the crapper
became amusing, to say the least. On very windy days it was de rigeur
to pop into the bog when passing and flush it, just to shut it up for
a while. I guess it would be something that only blokes would see, as
the crouchers have their backs to it, but on lifting the lid there
were waves sloshing back and forth down the pan, quite often.

  16. I remember a bike tour we did in southern Germany - we were sat on the
hotel veranda (it was near the top of a fairly large hill overlooking
the vallies in the hills below) drinking beer after a hard days riding
when we saw a thunderstorm working its way up one of the valleys below
    us.

It was quite surreal watching a thunderstorm from above and to the side
(and it fortunately didn't come actually into the valley we were on the
    side of).
I didn't try this bit (needless to say!). I did drink another litre of
    beer to compensate though.

I've seen pictures of similar occurrences, including interior shots of
icicles hanging off sprinkler heads. Bizarre.

No, but I was wondering what sort of poncy outside netty needed that
