But that's only 4.5 weeks, surely you get more than that?

My job's great, I could probably take 8 weeks leave without too many
    eyebrows being raised.

I think I've got 35 days leave to take this year, admittedly I've
    carried 5 days over though.

Why do you think that? Maybe that's the case for someone who has been
in the same job for years and accrued more, but IWHT that the general
    "standard" is around 22-25.

I've recently started this job (i.e. just over 6 months) and get 25
days but 3 of those have to be used during the Christmas shutdown, so
I'd not be able to take any more time off than Champ.
Lucky you. That's not the case for most of us, I'll bet.
    That's cheating!

  5. Not until I'd done a search and replace of "he " with "'". Then it worked
    beautifully...

"I grew up in a house that looked over t'North Sea. There was
nothing between t'sea and t'house except half a mile of flat
grass, and t'lazy (couldn't be bothered to blow around you, it'd
blow straight through you) easterly gales battered t'house regularly
all through t'Winter. Mind you, we had Proper Winters then - I have
some old pics somewhere showing t'front wall of t'house shining
whitely due to being covered in crystallised salt and on other
occasions gleaming through a sheath of ice, created when t'rain
flung at t'front wall froze on contact.

    Anyway - you get t'picture.

T'soil vent pipe stuck up some distance from t'level of t'gutter
(I remember this, as once I'd got to about 14 it was my annual task to
coat t'fucker in another layer of black gloss and then work my way
    around t'edges of t'roof painting t'snow-retaining woodwork
while lashed to t'chimney) and t'wind would moan and howl through
t'bird mesh on t'top of it.

T'suction would remove water from t'U-bend in t'bog down to the
top of t'exit pipe and then t'sounds emanting from t'crapper
became amusing, to say t'least. On very windy days it was de rigeur
to pop into t'bog when passing and flush it, just to shut it up for
a while. I guess it would be something that only blokes would see, as
t'crouchers have their backs to it, but on lifting t'lid there
were waves sloshing back and forth down t'pan, quite often."

Can I just add that I've currently got a total of 42.5 days accrued
leave, plus 6 days of TOIL. I only get 24 days hol per year, but I can
use the overtime hours for up to 2 days TOIL on any given trip, so
it's difficult to use it all up, particularly with not having the
usual 50-odd days of skiing planned this year...

Sadly they've just announced a policy of capping it at the end of each
year, so I mat lose it, unless I can persuade the dept. head to let me
carry ot forward. Trouble is, the rationale would go wsomething like:
"Well I had this accident and then had to be off sick for the best
part of 3 months, so I've not been able to use the holiday allowance."
Not sure that'll work, but I'll give it a try.

BTW where and when are you going boarding?

If the Internet's to be believed, it's derived from the Italian
    'cabinetti' or 'gabinetti', meaning 'cabinets'.

What's bugging me more is the name for that woodwork that stops the snow
falling off your roof. Any suggestions?

I would have had 36 days in my second year at Siemens, but they fucked
up and I quit, so it wasn't to be. Now I have to cope with 25. Boo hoo.

That mob _again_? It all sounds pretty good, though, but I can't for
the life of me understand why they do this for boarders only. There's
not that much difference between great skiing and boarding terrain,
after all. Seems a bit artificial to me.
There's plenty of stuff in AdH on its own, TBH. I've never been a fan
of Les2alps, though - the top is very flat and the runs down get
crowded by novices who've been on the nursery slopes which are also on
    the top. It's all upside-down.

Serr Che is nice too - and like AdH has a hidden valley outside of the
normal area. In their case it's not even marked as a run, but it's a
lovely scenic cruise starting with a steep-as-you-like drop into a
huge open bowl and ending up tracking a path alongside a little
stream. Bits of it might be awkward on a board, though, but it's
probably worth the little bits of walking. To find it you just go to
the top far right of the lift map and drop over the edge.

Anyhoo, I'm sure Neil and the guides will know it a lot better then I
    do ;-) Enjoy.

  17. I was tooling to work, with the winds right behind me, and it was a bit
eerie doing 70mph with absolutely *no* wind noise: travelling in still
    air.

  18. I used to get that a lot on the way to work on a particular stretch
of road between US and Siggenthal Station, the strong winds often came from
that particular direction. The sweet -- or eerie -- spot was around 80 km/h,
I'd never do 70 mph in Switzerland, nosiree!

Victorian euphemism used to be "necessary house" - not hard to see how that
could become "netty" in the mouth of a Geordie.
