The more devices are being implemented, the more I think it's a bloody waste
of money. People are going to speed and are going to do stupid things on the
road. That's a fact of life. I do agree though that accident hotspots should
be monitored, but to what extent. I do realise that if I do what the
lawmakers do want me to do, I have nothing to worry about, but that's just
it: how much do I (we) have to put up with costwise. I just wonder how much,
on average, is being spent per car owner. I think we're in for a big shock
when all has been calculated. They are trying to excuse these measures by
presenting examples like the one mentioned in the article (woman painting
    herself)

Then again: I don't live in any of these counties, not even in the UK for
that matter, so I don't give a fcuk.

Except it's a set of moving goalposts isn't it?

Which all seem to rely on you having a numberplate that can be
    automatically recognised.

I had a link to regs on this from a couple of years ago. I will see
if I can find it again. What money of a new law having the reg no
    painted on the car roof?

In any case, I thought RFIDs embedded in the number plate was the
    coming thing.

Perhaps you can get a "show plate" that just happens to conform to the regs
and use that instead. Or wrap it in tinfoil :)

Just what I was thinking re: show plates but tin foil won't work as well
    as lead.

Wheelies would certainly be easier with 50lbs of lead attached to the
    mudguard :)

    True.

If there was ever a reason to bend my numberplate back to something
approaching vertical, the story in the OP is.

I can see I'm going to have to build a box to put it in to keep the road
    muck off ;)

So were going to see police helicopters filling the skies trying to see
numberplates located in the usually inaccessable places they are on
cars and lorries? Who is going to pay for all these helicopters and
their running costs to make it viable? How about the safety issues of
them flying around the M25 area for instance and its locality to
Heathrow and its flightpaths? And what coppers is going to relish the
job of sitting in a helpicopter trying to photgraph numberplates on
moving vehicles for a whole shift?

We could fit them with Maverick missiles to take out speeders
automatically. Get the terrorists off the road before they injure or
    kill The Children.

Hallo everyone. I'm puzzled, why is this a problem? Its very simple, if
you don't speed then its no problem, is it?

I'm always careful about speed limits, but then with my job I have to
be! I can have loads of fun on my R1 without needing to break the law,
so I don't think this is a problem at all.

First time poster, so please don't flame!

If you've nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear, right?
The whole speed camera thing is supposed to be about safety. It's not, it's
about surveillance. Speeding is a good excuse for covering the country with
cameras and spy satellites, just like porn was a good excuse for censorship,
and terrorism is a good excuse for ID cards, DNA databases and the
    dismantling of civil liberties.

If you're not going to speed, what the **** do you need an R1 for?
First time top-poster, you mean. Clown.
