  1. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Andy Bonwick belched forth and ejected the
    following:
Me too. It's not that I like it so much, it's the sheer effortlessness
    of it.
That's what I thought but his IP resolves to somewhere in Denver but
    that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
    Heh - Thanks

You could explain how to have fun on an R1 without exceeding the speed limit.
Does it involve autobahns or moving to the IOM or Idaho?
(Does Idaho still have no speed limit?)

Sorry guys, I have found the FAQ and see that I should be writing down
here! Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I can have loads of fun on my R1 without having to break speed limits. I
can use the amazing acceleration to get up to the limit in no time at
all then I can overtake without needing to go too fast.

Like I said, I work for a company that makes speed detection equipment
and they take a very dim view of employees who get caught breaking the
limit so I have to be careful.

I suppose I could have stuck with my 500 Kawasaki, but the R1's
acceleration is what made me love it when I tried it (and I must admit
that I did go too fast a few times at first!).

I think I might take it to Germany one day just too see what going
    really fast is like.

    Well done.

Tell me something, did these folks make it easy to find the ffaq? Did
they present you with a box at your first post for example, asking if
you had read the ffaq and presenting you with a link if you said no. Or
anything similar to make it less likely you would offend local mores?
Or apologise to you in any way beforehand for using broken tools?

Did it ever? It was 65mph on the Interstate when I passed through it (3
    years ago).

No. I found it through Google. Do you think Google groups is better to
    use than motorcyclenewsgroups.com?
I like motorcyclenewsgroups.com, it lets me send posts to groups without
having to mess about with installing stuff on my PC at work , which they
    won't let me do.

I hope I can contribute to this group (I know now it's not a website!
LOL). It seems like an interesting place.

    It is that.

Great, now you've made the admission, you can come down off that high
    horse of yours.

    It's not a high horse, it's an R1! LOL.

I said that I went too fast at first because I wasn't used to the
acceleration so I overshot the speed I was supposed to be doing. With
practice I've found that I can hold my speed very accurately now and
    stay legal.

I think the point is more that you bought the wrong bike if you don't
want to exceed the speed limit in the UK.

I think the only class of road bike that you can have much fun on at
    approximately road-legal speeds are supermotos.

darsy emerged from their own little world to say
Agreed. He sounds like an ideal candidate for a Deauville.
I disagree. I'm surrounded by roads where it is difficult to ride over the
NSL on any bike. It's not only supermoto riders that enjoy them.

    you heartless bastard.
you're right - despite having owned one, I'd forgotten about big

But why? I can still enjoy the fantastic acceleration of the R1, it's
just that with a little care I can do so legally.
    I've never ridden one.

That's not the only sort of fun at legal speeds.

Life gets exciting when the frame's scraping the tarmac, but you're
still on the bike and (more or less) in control.

I wasn't only referring to riding my R-GS. darsy singled out that category
of bike. I enjoy riding mountain passes on any bike. Although, as simonk
almost says, riding them on a bike with a) a high seat to give good forward
vision, b) long travel suspension and c) lots of torque can make the
    journey *more* fun.

R1s arent any fun at all until you're well over 100mph. Below that
    they're as boring as ****.

I greatly enjoyed watching the 1300cc NHCA speed hill climb champion on
his R1 at Shelsley Walsh last year . He was coming round the last
corner, front wheel up for most of the finish straight, and over the
line at just over 100 mph before having to bring it to a halt and join
us in the top paddock. It didn't look the slightest bit boring.
