Valentino Rossi flew in here (Shawbury) this morning on his way to try out a
rally car (Subaru?) in Wales. We managed to get him to autograph a few
pictures and although he didn't say much he seemed quite cheerful. Flew in
direct from Valencia and was helicoptered out about half an hour later.

I thought it was quite common for rally drivers to be taken away by
    helicopter.
Much quicker than an ambulance on Welsh roads.

Hiya, I'm in Wellington. I didn't know they allowed civilian flights
    at Shawbury?

All military airfields will accept civvy flights - within airfield hours and
subject to operational requirements. The landing and parking fees are not
cheap compared to somewhere like a flying club field but we were the only
place close enough with a runway long enough and the right navaids.

Really? So 26 Squirrels, 4 Gazelles and 7 Bell 412 are used for weather
    observations?
