for a similar, though more recent reason to why we like to mention
Agincourt when dealing with the cowardly French.

Molesworth isn't exactly what you'd call obscure. Have a google for uses
of 'any fule kno' or "Dave Fotherington-Cameron" as a name for the tory
    leader, as starters for 9.

PS. I've read them. They've aged rather badly, in a Billy Bunter style.

Partly because sixty years isn't *that* long ago, partly because
Eastern Europe is the shape it is because of the second world war
(Poland moved West a bit) and partly because, as I remind students who
use the term `final solution' to refer to the answer to a maths
problem, nice people should be sensitive to certain things.

Quite, quite and quite. That still doesn't explain the childish jibes in
the direction of Germans (especially when the usual 'butts' of the jibes
    weren't even born in 1945).

  10. I think you're right. The Jennings stories have aged badly as well.

Someone did a 'Molesworth update' book a few years ago, though. Can't
remember who. Miles Kington? That was very funny, but obviously it was
better appreciated if you'd read the originals.

  11. Let's not forget there is a French archery school at Crecy - or was,
when I drove through it a few years ago.

Yeah, but I had read and lost the books before I was 12. That was some
time ago now and so I didn't remember who wrote them. Tried googling
    but my mojo was weak.
Yeah, I was vaguely worried about that, I got a New Statesman DVD
about a year back, as I remembered liking it when it was on tv. That
aged horribly, Yes Minister on the other hand is still sublime. Amazon
appear to have the whole series of books collected together and for
around £6.50 so I reckon I'll give it a spin.

    Try http://www.hedgessolicitors.co.uk/, specifically either Janis
Macknamara in Wallingford or Thomas Ash in Didcot, and ask for a quote.
The mrs reckons they'd see you right.
