The keyboard on the kids PC has the @ and " swapped over.

    What's that all about then?

It's set up for a US keyboard. You can change it in Control Panel.

you can also add it to the toolbar - I have a little "EN" icon, which
I can click to change it to "FR" and back.

This also happens if you inadvertently hit ALT and SHIFT keys - it
appears to toggle between the two (at least on this laptop).

AONTL. Mind you, I set up the quick change option to swap between FR
and EN, as it's quite handy.

I find it a pain to type in AZERTY mode (shifting for "." is a real
pain typing in URLs!), but when I take the laptop to Paris, it always
swaps into the FR mode, and so I added the toolbar change to make it
easy to change back to EN.

If not using the laptop, I can type on an AZERTY keyboard in EN mode,
as long as I remember not to look at the keys as I'm typing.

Your keyboard setup changes automatically? Bizarre.

I must admit that I'm more familiar with a French keyboard now than an
UK/US one. I still can't figure out why you have to hit "shift" before
    choosing numbers though.

Holy shit, I need to buy you a pint!

For months I've found that one of my IDEs would swap regional settings,
but the rest of Windows and any other running apps would be unaffected.
It would happen seemingly randomly and I always ended up restarting the
IDE, as it would drive me nuts.

I use a lot of the keyboard short-cuts and some are Shift-Alt sequences.
So I just tried what you said, and it gets the IDE back to normal.
    Brilliant.

Can't you just delete the French keyboard setup in the control panel?
If your SysAdmin has set up some sort of policy to do this on PC's on a
French subnet, he's a very strange man.

your paragraph implies we have one "SysAdmin". There are *dozens* of
people in our IT core services department who could be responsible for
such an abberation, and they're *all* strange.

It can be a pain, particularly when it changes its default setting for
no apparent reason. But I find the easiet way to avoid AZRTY issues is
to not use the FR setting at all, but just swap between US english and
US International, the latter of which allows accented characters by
first typing one of '"^ etc. followed by the character to be accented.

Of course, if you have a UK keyboard then that would bring its own
    issues all over again.

well, that's exactly it - I have a UK Keyboard on the laptop, and when
I connect it to our LAN in Paris, it seems to default to a FR layout,
which is a pain in the ****.

Is it running a login script?

Try logging on locally (disconnected) first and then connecting to the
    network.

This works for me when I'm in Germany, not only avoiding the keyboard issue
but it stops my network drive mappings being changed from my real home drive
    to something local.
