well, yes, that'd work, but I'd lose my AD authentifications and
    network drives....
    err...see above.

    was talking about.

Depends which domain you login with first. If it's with the cached version
of your network domain profile then there shouldn't be a problem.
The network drives don't appear in Explorer but any shortcut (file or
folder) will reconnect and the AD credentials should be honoured.
Only time this didn't work for me was when my local profile password had
    expired.

It doesn't work if you just logon to the local machine domain.

It allows you to not use the shift key to type the most frequent
accented letters. Choices had to be made...

I've searched the control panel and found the mouse & keyboard bit but
no where can I find a place to switch from US to UK settings.

It'll be under "Regional and Language Settings" in the Control Panel.
You need to select "English United Kingdom".

Hmm, there are 10 digits and four accented characters é,è,ç and à. The
    rest being symbols.

Seems like a silly choice to me. Mind you, I suppose frequency of use
of each of these characters has a lot to do with it. At the same time,
when I want to use the ^ or ¨ over a character, I have to hit two keys
anyway. e.g hôtel or Jamaïque (admittedly, there are fewer words with
    these sybmols).
