Duffle coats seem to have made a comeback with music types. Although
their association with left wing types might be a bit too much for you
    to Paddington Bear.

I saw China Crisis last Friday, and was slightly disappointed to
discover the duffel coats had gone. Now I know who took them.

This ersatz machismo doesn't fool us. A gay assassin would use something
    more graceful.

Best thing I've ever used was a latex poncho a then-gf got me. Looked like a
right tw*t (I didn't even know you could have gold-coloured latex) so it
might not be what you're looking for, but it was lightweight, took little
space when packed, dried within minutes indoors and was absolutely
waterproof, albeit not long enough, which meant I always had soaked knees
and calves. It was also problematic to wear on windy days as it was a tad
loose. The good part was that I could wear whatever I wanted underneath.

I tried googling for latex poncho, the results however tend to lead to
    rather "alternative" German shopping sites....

A bit more research and it looks like the material was PVC rather than
    latex. Makes more sense.

If you just want to stay dry, then a good old-fashioned cycling cape
(in bright orange) takes some beating. After the description above,
it would also seem to be relatively stylish and restrained.

I couldn't find any of the things, didn't even manage to turn the
    light on. Gave up eventually.

In my defense, I *had* to wear it from time to time or said ex-gf would have
had taken offence. I don't even know where it is now. Still, it worked
pretty well so I have to appreciate that.

I should have taken some pictures...

Erm, I'm afraid not. Do gold-coloured ponchos suit him?

I don't think he's too fussy about the colour of the latex
