    ........particularly photos.

So, basically what does the font do?

I was keeping them all on my laptop, silly I know but thought I needed
a spring clean when I discovered there was less than 10GB space left on
    my 100GB disc.

So, made use of an external HD (350GB) which has a seperate power
supply. This however has been acting up a bit recently so now Im
thinking I need something more stable.

Ive thought of online but it takes so long to upload on our broadband
line which is only a 2 or so meg :-/

Ive noticed that sainsbury had an offer of 25 DVDR discs at about £8
recently. Now I know that they're not rewritable, I know per mb they
will be more expensive but has anyone got a solution that works well
    for them?

Either another external hard drive, or some kind of online storage like
dropbox. I'm sure someone will send you an invitation to build up their
    own free storage.

What works for me is having 2 PCs - one connected to broadband (for
downloading stuff) and another which is sort of my personal library.

The method I use to transfer files from one to the other is via DVD+RW
disks - the disks are stored in a safe place as a backup in case the HDD
packs up on the library PC.

Obviously DVD+R disks are cheaper but its a lot of fucking about burning
each disk in turn and then working out which files to delete on the source
HDD. You soon end up losing files or backing them up twice (more likely a
    little of both).

What I use is Nero7 (bundled with a drive from Maplin) and InCd which allows
you to use a CD/DVD+RW just like it was a floppy.

That way you can put all the files into a backup folder (complete tree if
you like) and cut/paste from the source HDD to DVD, when the disk is full
you get prompted to put another in - repeat until all the files are backed
    up.

There are various warnings on the web about Nero8 and a special offer Nero9
someone picked up for me has yet to arrive, so I havent been able to try it
    yet.

There are sometimes compatibility issues with InCd and the one on the Nero7
disk doesn't like this MOBO but the InCd-Free I downloaded (since taken
    down) works fine.

Name a binaries group and I'll upload a Nero7 ISO and the InCD.

    @news.eternal-september.org:

even if you could upgrade to a faster download speed the upload speed might
not increase. The trick is to do it frequently or set it to run overnight
so the upload does not impact on other internet use. Using an online
account like flickr, as ogden suggests, handles your indexing, storage and
sharing in one product. You can even use it when travelling to transfer
photos from a camera thus saving the need to issue a Lozzo Ultimatum or
having to buy another memory card.

hmmm had a look at dropbox but potentially 20 dollars a month for
storage? It'd be cheaper to run with DVD RWs I think.

Never thought about that as I assumed there'd be a limit that wouldnt
meet my needs but it appears to be unlimited, looks pretty good to me
    unless Im missing something obvious

I have no idea how to or desire to start with nero and InCD etc to be
honest, I want a simple solution and cant be arsed to faff about
learning new programmes to be honest. Im sure it's a solution but it's
too much for me Im afraid.

Early days I know but looking like the Flickr upgrade may be the way to
go except I've just thought and did a quick check and it appears that I
can't upload RAW files to flickr. Hmmmm bugger

googled and **** that, again, command line stuff etc is beyond me :-/
I cant get my head round why I simply wouldnt drag and drop to a usb
external drive rather than use robocopy either.

drag & drop? How quaint. My Seagate external drive runs a utility that
automagically transfers any new data from the desktop HDD to itself at a
    predetermined interval I selected.

Terastation with a USB drive plugged in. The Terastation has a share
called backups, that all the machines can access, but the mail server
does an rsync of the home folders as well as the mail files.
The Terastation then does its own backups to an external drive.

When the external gets full I just bin a month of backups.

I also have an *archive* of photos on the USB drive, so there are three
    copies of that.

It was as simple as drag & drop with the 320Gb Mobox USB external I bought
    from Lidl.

There is the inconvenience that it needs the combined current supply of 2
USB ports (and still struggles to spin up) and you can't run it via a
    powered USB expander hub.
