Scheduled job, and Synctoy 2.1. Then you never have to think about
it, and it can be done via GUI.

One of the Maplin specials. Seagate portable HDD for about 40 quid, or two
(if your photo's are REALLY important) solid state flash drives.

Cut and Paste works for moving photos/folders to an external HDD or flash
    drive.

I've got a growing pile of fucked Seagate drives!

Google: "seagate fail" and see what comes up.

Samsung drives have served me well for some time, a couple of Hitachi drives
have served much longer even though the clicking noise they make when
    seeking is a little unsettling.

What's wrong with a Microsoft SkyDrive? There is 25 Gb storage on my
ID. If I needed another, just use/get another ID. Simples.

ah, now that's a thought, technically unlimited but painfully slow on
my connection, though again, sort it overnight and as long as the puter
    doesnt crash should be ok.

    It's on the list.

This was over 18 months ago IIRC and it's 3.5 times bigger than the HD
on this very laptop so it's all relative.

Buys a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive, saves some files
direct and also uses WD's free Acronis Disk Image for additional
    backup.

I looked around for a sensible solution after my external hard drive
failed. Fortunately it was the back-up that went phut but it did make
me think about the consequences of losing all my photos if disaster
    struck.

In the end I signed up to www.backblaze.com/UK-backup.html for $50/
year since I wanted unlimited storage. They throttle the upload speed
so a slow line doesn't make much difference but it takes a loooong
time to perform the first backup - like over a month for 150Gb. After
that any new files or changes to existing ones are automatically added
to the backup. It doesn't do Windows or programme files though so it's
no use for making an image of a machine or anything like that.

Clickfree usb external drive. Runs on USB power alone if the
USB port can deliver enough voltage. It is pretty much "fire and forget".
Once it is set up (easy) it then automatically backs up all your data at
whatever interval you set it for. Mine is backing up my data as I am
    typing this.

Overnight might be a little generous. On an average home broadband
connection, uploading 25Gb will take >5 days

  15. Only the fact that Images tend not to be stored at true native res (or
go through some sort of compression) and that a Flickr account can be
permanently deleted with no way back.

Oh, I see that they did finally manage to recover the data:

Yeah, they might delete all 4000 of your photos and not give a shit until
they get some really bad press about it.

    Plus it's an annual payment.

Microsoft SyncToy 21 will give you a GUI for synchronizing.

I'd just buy an external usb hard drive.
Hotukdeals have 1TB usb drives listed around the £45 mark.

You'd need 88 DVDs to backup 350GB of data or 44 if using dual layer.
How long do you think that will take including checking that they were
    burned correctly ?

It depends on your OS. I use a script from one machine to the other..

    /usr/bin/rsync --no-motd -avz -e "ssh -i $HOME/keys/shirele_ida" des@sivan:'/Users/des/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library' $HOME/Images/sivan.pictures

Its not such an ordeal (or expense) if you only do 5 or 6 disks at a time.

It also ensures a permanent backup in case the target HDD dies.
