I remembered I had a laptop HDD (80GB) sat in a kitchen drawer so have
got a usb adaptor / case and now have this.

I think Ill stick with the 350ish powered one as backup number 1, use
this usb powered 80GB one as backup 2 and when I see the DVD's on offer
again will propbably pick up a spindle and burn some of those too.

All this has also made me look at the pics I have still got in a
critical way too, I need to be a little harsher and honest with what
pics I really want to keep so it's no bad thing all in all.

I use windows backup to a local 1TB external using the scheduler[1]. I
sync to a portable drive for my documents & photos with sync toy &
then sync that drive to my laptop & to a desktop at work. Most photos
are also on photobucker at $25pa.

[1] Which won't work properly for some reason if trying to sue the PC
    as a streaming source.

Not really: dye-based recordable DVDs don't last that long - probably less
    than 10 years.

Considerably longer than anything Seagate had anything to do with.

I picked up a DVD that's been sitting on my window sill for a month. I might
as well have given it 12 MV under a linac.
    Dampness/Mould also gets to them.

Would that work on SSD's do you think? They seem to have quite the
reverse problem according to an article on The Reg.

  8. Get a couple of 2.5 inch external drives. Or a sata dock.

  9. Irta 'data sock'; which is quite appropriate, really.
