I agree with myself most of the time too.

Well, actually, it's a bit of both. Kimbolton has a long and glorious
history (King Harold had a hunting lodge there which was ceded to
William after 1066) and among other things had Charters for fairs and
    markets.

In order to maximise income, the High Street was diverted to run
through the Market Place - hence the two 90 degree bends at either end
of the village. Tolls were extracted from travellers at a point in
between the two bends - which slowed them sufficiently as to make
riding straight through the toll point very difficult.

Many Market towns have this arrangement, but it is particularly
noticable at Kimbolton, as the castle used to stand at one end of the
High Street. As a legacy there is a very high brick wall around the
outside of the bend, very tight to the road where the castle used to
be (now a public school) which precludes the passage of car
    transporters.

Good. There are few things more unsettling than the sight (and sound)
of a schizophrenic arguing with themselves.

Didn't read the lavatorial library available in the downstairs khasi
here, obviously. "Villages of Bedfordshire and surrounding areas", by
    Reverend Wotsisface.

You can never know too much. Well, you can if Darsy's wibbling, obv.

Well, I actually went to school round there, and took my first driving
lessons through Kimbolton, so I knew why car transporters were banned.
I had no idea about why the high street was like that, though.
