Hmmm. I was completely unaware of this, so thanks for the
    enlightenment....

I have an 1890s built house with 12" solid walls: Works fine here.
Although the router is positioned in the attic such that line of sight
tends to be through the floors, not the walls....

Now this is a bit more useful than the initial outburst. Thank you *very*
much for this link. The house opposite my parents looks like an MI5
listening station. They guy who lives there couldn't be any *less* hammy.
This will be something to be avoided I'm sure!
    Cheers.

yes indeed - our previous place was an 1890s built house with 12"
solid walls, and wireless worked just fine.

There's obviously something about the ceilings in the current place
    that is wireless unfriendly.

It's the line of sight you have to consider, though. A device each
side 12 inches of brick might not be a problem at the same height.
Put one device a couple of floors up, just the other side of a thick
wall and the signal has to travel through SQRT(144 + (height
    difference in inches)^2) of brick.

yeah, I know - but in the old house we had the wireless base station
in the front room on the middle floor of the house, and there was good
reception everywhere, even out in the garden.

In the current place, wireless works in the same room as the WBS, but
only one room away (either horizontally or vertically) - nothing
diagonal or through two walls/ceilings works.

  7. If you (or previous) have had anything done to the cielings that have
involved large amounts of rebuilding they may have included metal
fireproofing mesh as part of the replastering.

They did in a place I lived in about 20 years ago - all the downstairs
rooms (after the stairs got moved & some other internal walls got
remodeled) got replastered (including ceilings) and as part of doing
the ceilings they put up a metal mesh under the base coat of
fire-plaster. Admittedly we lived in the upstairs and the downstairs
was our church rooms (so was defined as a public space even though it
was only used on Sundays and one or two evenings a week) so it may have
been a good bit more stringent than your average home replastering.

I'd imagine that would mess up your wifi reception somewhat chronic.

As might steel RSJ's if you have had a lounge conversion done and your
wireless is the other side of it.

there are 2 RSJs each on 3 floors. I'm sure that has something to do
    with it.

  9. No it isn't. It is merkin and as with all other things they have Their
own way of doing it and it is thus inevitably technically far inferior
to anything we or the indians develop that the chinks manufacture.

I notice also it is a little dated: "blackout in the northeast" ?? I
remember a huge blackout across NE merkainia about 25 years ago but
nothing which could be described as recent.

The article is as much a description of really how shoddy merkin stuff
really has become as a result of their insistence on poorly thought out
    standards .

"Most ham radio stations use 100 watts of power, some use as much as
1500 watts." It would also appear that the guy seems never to have
heard of QRP and the importance of paying attention to receiving biased
technologies and how useful it can be all over.

It does actually demonstrate very sharply The Merkin Approach To
Everything and in this case to being heard, which would be more of
"shout louder" where the rest of the world would say "wash yer fucking
    ears out".[1]
