FOAK: Bugzilla anyone?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, May 6, 2010.

  1. Anyone got comments on Bugzilla, or similar?

I need some bug-tracking software, and free is good. Functional is
    better.

We've got some Bugzilla and Jira hackers at my place.

    Depends what you're looking for functionality-wise ..

We used bugzilla. It worked fine.

Edgewall's Trac integrates nicely a bug tracker, a wiki, Subversion and some
    basic project management stuff.

Google will tell you some places that host it for free (for trying purposes)
or for a ridiculous monthly fee if you can't be arsed with the installation
    process.

It's pretty easy to install, and as I recall is available as LiveCD
version. Downside is the Trac usernames are not linked to the SVN
usernames. Massive upside is being able to cross-reference tickets with
changesets and vice versa, so it's easy to see what was checked in to fix
    a problem, etc.

The wiki is useful, even if the formatting tags are a bit tedious and hard
    to remember.

The thing about the usernames not being synced is probably just a quirk
of your particular installation - we use it extensively here and don't
    have that problem.

I'd definitely choose Trac over Bugzilla.

Roundup and RT are worth a look as well - they both solve the problem of
attaching email conversations into a particular ticket, which is
    something Trac doesn't really address.

I wouldn't doubt that at all.
Given some of the email conversations that lead to ticket creation, I
don't always see that as a problem.

It depends whether you have users to support that don't have access to
the ticketing system directly - being able to CC a bug email address
when following up or asking for additional information is quite a useful
    workflow in some organisations.

Oh sure, I see it as handy in some situations.

One of the things I want to try is having both sides identified with an
ActiveDirectory LDAP, so that user authentication would be a snap.
    Wot he said.

    Or not :)

We offer OTRS or Excel sheets to our customers, and keep them away as much
as possible from the dirty details ;)

I've used Mantis in a project and it was quite nice. The last two paying
ones I used (HP's Mercury and Rational Clearquest) were sneered at by
    the developer crowd.

IME developers automatically sneer at development software that costs
    money.

If I'm doing free, then Jira or Bugzilla. If paying then Rational
    Team Concert.

Not really but it has to be helpful. There is development software aimed
more at the management than at the development. And remember who pays
the software when it's not free :)

Someone pays for it when it's free as well.
