For high-end stuff, yes, but AMD are still giving slightly more pop per
    pound in the mid-range processors.

Glad to hear that they have one happy customer ;o)
Have you had to return anything for repair?
The one good thing about them is that if something goes bang in it's early
stages of life, they normally replace it with PDQ.
Their repair side of the business is hopeless in the norm.

    why buy a Dell?

    I bought one of these:

two months ago, and it's fucking lovely.

    That said, I don't play games on the PC (I have an X-BOX 360 and a PS3
    for that sort of thing).

read the reviews - it really is as good as you'd expect from what
    people have said about it.

The only downer is that being a SFF PC, there's no scope for internal
expansion. But it's got loads of USB ports, a built in DVD writer,
multi-card reader etc, so you don't really need anything else. I guess
the main thing it's lacking is a TV-OUT (well, it doesn't have TV-IN
either, but I easily rectified that with a £25 quid USB Freeview
    thingy).

Windows Media Centre Edition is very kid-friendly, BTW, and - if the
offer's still on - you get a free upgrade to Vista when you want it.

Bloody stupid name, isn't it. I've trained my kids, who don't want one, to
tell all their friends that it's a Geordie games-console whose name is
    correctly pronounced Why-Aye.

Well they sorted out the odd PC problem on the bench, dead NIC type stuff
but a faulty printer was just an immediate box swap. I lived next door in
    Oxford.

TBF I was using the Corporate Service.

They truly suck dead dogs arses, and are simultaneously both
    spectactularly inept and supremely arrogant.

    Utter cunts.

Indeed. I asked them to repair/replace a VCR that blew up after 13
months. They said "tough, it's out of warranty", so I sent them a
recorded delivery letter giving them 14 days to arrange repair or I'd
    see them in court.

Tbf, they did ring a couple of days later to say they'd changed their
minds & would repair it as a 'good will gesture'. The repair consisted
of replacing all the internals, & it blew up again a few months later.
I gave up at that point & put Samsung firmly in the list of 'don't
    touch with a bargepole' manufacturers.

Serious question, if the warrantee was 12 months why did you think you'd
be successful? Or, is there some nonsense that everything has to be
    good for 24 months now?

Just the usual statutory rights under the Sale of Goods act. Just
because a warranty only lasts 12 months doesn't mean you have no legal
    standing after it's expired.

If something fails within an unreasonably short timespan, you stand a
good chance of getting at least a partial refund, or help towards
repair costs. That timespan depends largely on the cost of the goods.
    E.g. try it on with a cheapo ?12 MP3 player & I doubt you'd stand a
chance. However a grand's worth of stereo would be a different matter,
as you would reasonably expect that to last significantly longer than
    12 months.

I did the same thing when my Tiger sprag clutch died. It was over a
year out of warranty, but Triumph soon coughed up for all the parts[1]
after a mention of small claims court.

    [1] Over 400 quid's worth.

A work colleague's (car) gearbox spat its internals after 50000 miles, a
couple of years after the warranty expired, despite it having been main
dealer serviced to the schedule. IIRC, the manufacturer initially offered to
pay half the replacement cost, also as a 'goodwill gesture' (which basically
means 'we know it's failed prematurely, but we'll avoid paying the full
replacement cost if we can'). They haggled a bit, and it ended up with the
manufacturer footing 75% of the bill.
