So, FOAK, what would be symptoms of a cam chain in need of adjustment?

The engine in question is my lovely rusty 30 year old jap paperweight. [1]

[1] It's been in for a "service" but I'm unsure if it actually was adjusted.

The word "Honda" on the petrol tank is often a clue.

Yes, for some reason [1] my .sig didn't show. It *is* a Honda, how did
you guess? And... do you have any other symptoms?

[1] Trying to move to Thunderbird for email and news.

Tell ye what, give us the first couple of letters of the model
designation, and we'll all start to guess,
    CB, or VF is it?

Years of experience sonny and don't you fucking forget it.

I may but that is really a matter which should remain between me and my
    therapist.

Hondas are infamous for their non adjusting self adjusting cam chain
tensioner technologies. The usual cure is to loosen the retaining bolts
half a turn or so and give it a whack and see if it makes the engine
quieter. If it doesn't then it ain't the camchain that is making the
    noise.

I've heard as steve avauche mentions that the auto tensioner is crap,
especially on the honda in my (now reapearing) sig.

CB this one, but I've owned a VF500F.. no cam chain problems there
though. Not entirely sure there's a problem with this one, either, but...

    OK gramps.

I'm aware of that, and there seemed to be a model specific procedure
with this lovely m/c, but I can't seem to locate it now that I want it.

I've got the shop manual already.. It just says what you just did. I
guess I could try it, but I'm trying to find out some more info before
getting into it and not knowing what to look for.

That sounds familar... but how do I know this is something I should try?
Short of the damn thing blowing up or what have you...

Meh. I don't ride it like a classic, I don't clean it like a classic,
I'm sure as hell not going to let it think it's a classic.

Well it certainly is. I'll quote a TOG posting here, from a few years
ago when I had a 400/4. It's talking about how to adjust the camchain,
    in case it's not clear.
