My camera at work is in the process of going tits up [1] and so I want
to replace it with something half decent

I was thinking of up to £1000 ish

so what and from where would anyone suggest ?

[1] - e.g. it gets in a sulk and won' take photos because "the card
cover is open", which requires a sharp clout or throwing it at something
    to get it going

I have a Canon G5. Does everything I need and a little more.
Reasonable price now, although when I got it I paid over £1k as it had only
    been out a week.

Saw one on Fleabay for £100!

Why not repair your work one?

What is the work one anyway?

raden emerged from their own little world to say
clean the switch/sensor with a decent contact cleaner i.e. not WD40

    a) it's not worth it

    b) I need to spend some company money or else it will disappear as tax

    That was just an e.g.

I also have a Dimage 7 which was fairly good in its day

I'm looking for a current equivalent in "now" technology

raden scribbled on the back of a napkin:
It would friggin' help if you told us if you wanted film or digital and
what you tend to use it for.

If you're talking film, go used and with that kind of the world's your
Oyster card. I'd get something like a late-ish Contax and a couple of
decent lenses for that kind of money.

If you're talking digital, you should be able to pick up a decent
consumerish SLR for that kind of money. Dixons currently has the
Olympus E-500 twin lens kit with a bag and a 6x4 print on sale for 599
IIRC. Other than that you're talking Konica Minolta 5D or 7D, Canon
350D, Nikon D50/D70 and a whole host more.

The lens costs about £30 extra - for that it's an excellent lens, much
better than the 35-70mm I had with my EOS600 as a kit lens. You need to use
it on f8 - but then it's reasonably sharp - especially for £30.

It is true that the L series lenses are vastly better. But they are bigger,
heavier and much dearer. This bloke sounds like he needs a point and press
    jobby.

    Looks interesting

My reservations with Sony is that they have different standards to the
    rest of the world

No, that's what I was using before - an emergency purchase after some
thieving scrotes broke in and nicked the previous one

I'm after a decent quality digital camera with some bells on

If you decide to sell that, let me know would you?

I've got Minolta AF lenses and I'd like to get a digital body that's
    compatible.

canon 350D + one of the new IS lenses, absolutely gorgeous. Currently
canon are doing some very very nice offers on the base unit.

Ah, I'm thinking of the Dynax 7d. As you were.

If anything by Canon looks suitable then usually the cheapest place is
    their ebay shop.

You really, really don't want a Dimage 7. Trust me on this.

Looks like I'm veering in the direction of a Canon EOS 20D, so I'm
    possibly interested
