Saw one of them this morning, and they're even more difficult to
distinguish from the standard model than the Passat R36 is.

But I don't think it has quite the Q-car factor of the Passat. Been
enjoying it immensely the last week or two.

The way we were. I imagine many of us have had dodgy sigs in the past. I
    know I have.

My brother has had a focus for sometime, it's been pretty reliable
despite a GF coming within a gnat's cock of writing it off twice. I've
borrowed it and it was OK.

    It's in the Jargon File.

    "warlording /v./

[from the Usenet group alt.fan.warlord] The act of excoriating a bloated,
ugly, or derivative sig block. Common grounds for warlording include the
presence of a signature rendered in a BUAF, over-used or cliched sig
quotes, ugly ASCII art, or simply excessive size. The original `Warlord'
was a B1FF-like newbie c.1991 who featured in his sig a particularly
large and obnoxious ASCII graphic resembling the sword of Conan the
Barbarian in the 1981 John Milius movie; the group name alt.fan.warlord
was sarcasm, and the characteristic mode of warlording is devastatingly
    sarcastic praise. "

well, no: unless you know what you're looking for (the shiny grill,
lowered suspension and wider/lower profile tyres, and of course the
"r32" logo on the back) it looks like a bog standard golf. That's one
    of the things that appeals.
you bought the estate? That is Q car style, for sure.

I've read reports that it handles like a pig though. Too front-end
heavy; the A3 3.2 is the same.

I must be thinking of something else, as googling seems to imply it's
pretty spot on. So scratch that last post. Ho hum...

Passat and A3 are Haldex, with transverse engines.

Having just returned from a shopping trip in the MX5 (magnetic tool
holders, strap wrenches and a mini blowtorch/soldering kit from Aldi) I
recommend you get something with ABS and not shod with P6000s.

I had nearly convinced myself that the Pirellis could stay indefinitely,
but a tail wag turning at one junction and a brown trouser moment
braking for another don't inspire confidence. OK it was a bit damp, but
the lock up on braking took me a bit by surprise - must have been
diesel. Been years since I had a car without ABS and shades of the Welsh
Alfa incident cackled at me briefly.

Of course. The Passat also has significantly, but subtly, altered
bodywork, but then it has to be said the bog-standard one is much more
boring looking than the Golf anyway.
Aye. I'm having to be careful with some of the boy-racer types around
here - it's just so easy to cruise past someone in a space they
wouldn't have considered enough for an overtake, and some of them get
mighty pissed off being overtaken so easily by a Passat, with lots of
    light-flashing and tailgating to follow.

    Hehehe.

Beat me to it. I know nothing about the A3[1] but certainly the VWs
are completely different in almost all respects to the larger Audis.
Different floorpan, different engine & layout, different
    transmission[2], different 4WD system...

[1] It's just another small car to me.
[2] Although I see they've started to put 7-speed DSG boxes in the new
    A4 and A5 ranges.

I was thinking about him yesterday and imagining what he'd make of
