Occasionally my interweb connection throws a wobbly - I can
send/receive email, connect to usenet, ftp, but can't get pull in any
web pages (I've tried different browers).

    Wassup?

You could be hitting a shite proxy server. Used to be common with NTL,
& the solution was to hard-code the settings to a more stable proxy.
    Who's your ISP?

Happens to me occasionally. Restarting the PC fixes it.

I'm guessing it's Virgin formerly NTL. As well as dodgy proxies their DNS
gets overwhelmed too. A while back, five of us shared an NTL cable
connection and we all used alternative DNS. Open DNS in my case.

Optimity - a smallish company who provide for all things internetty for
SWMBO's company - at least we have an account manager who I can hassle
and get then to take it up with BT.

I have some issues with Virgin formerly NTL. OTOH I have issues with
    OpenDNS as well.

Ah, that could be my problem. I regularly get intermittent time-outs on
DNS lookups, and yet if I refresh a web page that's just failed, it
invariably works again. Not always though.

Try with the Google DNS servers:

    <pedant mode>
Doesn't "invariably" mean the same as "always"?

Well you gets what you pays for eh. I have the same problem but unlike TTNet
DNS, OpenDNS actually tell you where stuff is, instead of redirecting you
to a big red "This site is banned!!" page when you click on a youtube link.

They have really started to get stroppy about this and are seeming to ban
much more at the national boundary firewall instead. Google has trouble with
a lot of stuff randomly as they are busily blocking big chunks of google's
net-block due to the banning of you tube and other weird stuff.

Then again it could just be massive incompetence.
