Any views on a decent cordless drill? It needs to be cordless because
my garage is ten minutes walk from my flat.

Aldi had one quite recently; if you're lucky, some stores will still
    have them in stock.

If it's just for 'hobby' use, I'd go for the cheapest you can find
that's at least 18v & comes with two batteries. It won't last as long
as a Makita/Ryobi etc but it'll be a damn site cheaper & may still last
    a lifetime.

You don't have any power in your garage?

Exactly, and I don't feel like asking the landlord to fit a socket.

I'd buy something like the Makita 8390DWAE not cheap but will last and
you'll be able to get spare batteries for it for years to come.

Or you could buy four Wickes own brand for less money, each of which is
cheaper than a replacement Makita battery.

    There's a light.
This is Bath: there aren't many city centre garages. Anyway, since the
housing market appears to be about to go tits up, I should be able to
    buy a place soon.

I was going to say the same thing. I've got a B&Q "Performance" one
    that meets Krusty's criteria.

It's a hammer drill and has gone though solid brick double-skinned
walls ok and lasted about 4 years so far. For 30 quid it's been fine.

If you want quality a nice big Bosch job is doing me *very* nicely.

200 quid for something that'll spend most of its life doing nothing, as
opposed to 200 quid for something that'll be used daily by a builder type.
    possibly?

D.I.Y. tools are usually plenty good enough for the intended job and the
prices for cheap (and still reasonable) drills are such that if the tool
goes tits up after the warranty period ends, buying another new one will
still see you quids in over buying a 200 quider.

whilst you're probably correct, bear in mind it's going to get a lot
    harder to get a mortgage.

Not so much harder as to outweigh the effects of lower house prices,
especially if you have a deposit.

Hmm, I think I'll keep my presently in-credit one account open then,
rather than closing it as I was going to.
