FOAK: Digital Cameras

  1. Do you take many pictures that fall into that criteria? If so and you
must stick with compact, I'd take a look at the Ixus range. The Ixus
700 I have, is known for being at the low end of the barrel distortion
spectrum - low enough that you wouldn't notice under most normal
    conditions.

Great glass in them too, and the 700 is a proper metal body ixus.

Not sure what they're costing these days, but there's several new
models out, so looking for a slightly older one might help you out.

Seconded. I have an S500 Card, and it's great. Take up no pocket space (as
it's very small) and takes nice photos. Downsides would be lack of
viewfinder and doesn't take AAs (I can't see why either of these things are
problems - but the review sites list them as such).

    Canon Ixus 60...

I bought one for Anya a little while back, and I've got an Ixus 50 and
they're really nice. You get a little bit of purple fringing
occasionally in bright sunlight but other than that it's great. Takes
SD cards, definitely easily pocketable and has enough pixels to keep
    anyone happy.

I've spent hours reading reviews on there. There's several cameras which
all come out with roughly the same conclusion, hence wanting
recommendations from people who own the cameras.

Well, I've just ordered a Casio Exilim EX-S600. Pretty much the same
spec. as the Z600, but smaller.

£141.95 with next day delivery from Jessops.

Not a bad price for the camera but their SD cards are expensive, compared
    with 7dayshop.com

    e.g.

    1Gb generic for £19.99 vs £9.99
    or
Sandisk 1GB exteme III for £42.99 vs £31.74

    My choice would be Dane-Elec 1GB High Speed 133x @ £15.99 or 2GB @ £27.99
from 7dayshop, neither listed on Jessops.

  11. Yip, good idea.

Dismiss the views of a guy who has hands on experience of just about every
digital camera made to date in favour of the opinions of average consumers
who have owned one or two. Good plan.

    Oh, **** off, will you.

Did you actually read and comprehend what I said: 'all roughly the same
conclusion'..... so I wanted some input from people who've used the
cameras to make a final decision.

  14. Eh, no.
Are you some kind of fucking retard who can't make up his own mind given
*EXPERT* opinions? You need the reassurance of your little clique so you
don't buy something they aren't familiar with then?

Hey, it's your money man, do what the **** you want with it - I was just
    trying to *help*.

    Yes, of course.

Do you actually understand the idea that, given a whole set of reviews
of cameras with similar spec. and pretty similar reviews, it's actually
difficult to make a final decision.

I've had 2 people recommend the Exilim range now, so it was worth
    asking.

  16. No. I read then buy. Easy. But then I have the ability to make simple
desicions based on fact along with my own personal preferences given
asthetics, specific strengths etc - you clearly don't.
Well that't it then - go buy an Exilim!

Well yes SteveH but one of your main criteria was avoiding barrel distortion
and to quote from StevesDigicams for the Exilim 600, "The lens exhibits a
slight chromatic aberration (purple fringing in high-contrast areas),
noticeable barrel distortion at wide angle, and slight barrel distortion at
    telephoto"

So the expert opinion is irrelevant and you accept the recommendation of a
couple of amateur users on a non-photography newsgroup - ho hum.

As Porridgewog says - it's your money :)

Unfortunately, it's something that all compact digital cameras suffer
    from.

One of the other review sites (forget which one) have a picture of a
grid so you can see how bad the distortion is - just about every non-SLR
    was similar.

None are anywhere near as bad as the old Coolpix ranges.

    So it's a trade off.

However, the image quality I've seen from the examples posted by Ginge
were enough to persuade me to buy one.
