I know there a few photographers on here so I though this would be as
a good a place as any to get opinions on a Digital SLR camera.

I'm almost decided on the Canon EOS 1000D. It seems to tick all the
boxes and comes in at an average of £350.00 which I'm happy with.

Does anyone have any experience of this or any other similar spec/
    price camera they could recommend?

    Here's a comprehensive review.

The key component will be the lens(es) you use. The above review site has
    very comprehensive lens comparisons.

Is that with the kit lens (18-55) and the Tamron 70-300? I paid about 600
    quid not very long ago.

All my recent fuzzy pictures have been taken with that.

I assume that's with the standard 18-55mm lens?
If you were willing to buy second hand it would open up more possibilities.

I've seen a 500D go for less than £290 and several 40Ds go for less than £350
    in the past two weeks.

I'm quite happy with the Canon EOS 300D that I bought for £100 a year or
    so ago.
Took me a while to find that it doesn't do movies though.

The 300D was the one that made DSLR cameras affordable. In comparison to even
the 400D, it is slow and ancient.

  15. a 40D for that money? Almost makes me want to cry. Still I love mine
and it'll be years before I exhaust its capabilities.

I know. The launch of the 60D has had the knock down effect.
Same here but I still get tempted by the 5DII. I don't need it but I want one

I'd like a DSLR that's the same size as my 35mm film SLR. The modern
    stuff seems very unwieldy.

I'm looking at taking two film camera bodies with me to Norway and
    brushing up on my getting-it-right-first-time-without-seeing-it-first
    photography skills.

I may even take some slide film for the Northern Lights. For comedy
value I may dig out my old Lubitel.

    Faster than me anyway.

Anyone know what the 'resolution' of a modern lens is?
Or how many megapixels you need before the lens becomes the bottleneck?
