Kodachrome hasn't exactly been mainstream film stock for nearly 20 years.
The last roll of slide film I used was in 1990/91 - it's of trips out in
the UK with East German friends.

E6 processing is still pretty much as available as it was in the 90s -
both slide formats were in decline long before the advent of digital but
the firms doing development offer develop and scan with the
    transparencies unmounted.

I'm toying with the idea of slide film and the Northern Lights - mainly
because I have a half decent 35mm SLR and only a point and press digital.

Prolly a good idea to back up one's digital photos every now and again.

keep them on your current machines hard drive, and upload them to an
    online service like flickr.

Exactly the same set of 1s and 0s they are now. Probably stored on
    different media mind.
Mine have been regularly shifted from disc to disc over the last 10
years. Drives fail, drives get too small, etc.
I doubt the JPG format is going anywhere soon. It's been around for
    more than 20 years already.

And I don't fancy printing over 10 thousand photos.

You mean it would be a user error? Who'd have thought it?

And wonderfully cheap these days. I've just kitted my new Netgear
ReadyNAS Duo out with 2 2TB drives. The drives were 70 quid each. I
continue to be shocked by how cheap mass storage is now. No-one
really has an excuse any more for not backing up.

  8. You don't need to.
Print the best 100. The rest aren't important.

Quite. Also, if one does things properly, one just saves directly to the NAS.
For Windows users, it's an easy change to get "My Documents" to point to the
    NAS too.

I wonder if there is anything more stable than hard drives as a backup media
    though?

I'd like to add an array or whatever to my server, but I'm scared of

Hell, I can't even remember how the drives are partitioned.

That reminds me, I should convert my Kodak Photo CD images into a modern
    format while
the software is still available. Not that I have any images worth saving
    for posterity.

A recurring idea for a horror movie plot has a meteor flyby that
    degausses the planet.

My Macs are set up with Time Machine to backup to the NAS. The NAS
itself is RAID0 (the drives mirror), and it backs up to a second
removable 2TB USB drive on a weekly basis.

The Windows work laptop has been set up so the My Documents folder and
a few others are actually a 50Gb Dropbox account. I'll let their
server farm worry about it's own backups.
Must admit I can't think of anything. Is tape still around? DVD is
out because it's too small and degrades. Multiple redundant hard
drives is the only way I think.

    Just get one of these...

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-ReadyNAS-RND2000-Storage-Solution/dp/B001O35S7M

bang two drives of your choice from their hardware compatibility list
in, connect to network, and enjoy RAID0 backup (or RAID5 if you wish)
goodness. Sod faffing around with servers.

I think it's far more likely my house burns down and takes out all the
    paper photographs.

Reminds me, I must get a fireproof safe that the NAS can live in.

Point of order. RAID0 is striping (e.g. extending a single volume over
at least two disks in a stripe formation). It offer no protection.
    You're talking about RAID1 (mirroring)

RAID5 requires at least 3 physical disks to work.

I bloody hope so too. The SC101 I had was so buggy on the s/w side, it
was unbelievable. And it used a proprietary file system which was
shite. I couldn't connect my Linux box to it either. Their customer
    support was an absolute abortion.

What a complete piece of crap it was. It was the worst piece of kit
I've ever bought from Netgear. I think the only reason I picked it up
in the first place, was because it was one of the first home network
    storage solutions on the market.

Well, I did a fair bit of research before buying and there didn't
appear to be any real horror stories. For the price point, I couldn't
    beat it.
