I looked at Drobos and Buffalo products, but the prices were all a bit
silly (north of 500 quid for 4TB). So far the Netgear has been great,
and the support available at www.readynas.com is excellent. It runs a
Linux variant too, so you can actually run other stuff on it too. I
run the Transmission bittorrent client on it.

Yes, of course. Writing in a hurry yesterday. It's actually got a
Netgear version of RAID1 called RAID-X. Same as RAID1 but can
dynamically expand the disc size if you want to add more storage. Say
you've got two 1TB discs in. You replace one with a 2TB and it
mirrors the 1TB over to it, still only giving you 1TB of storage in
total. Then you replace the other 1TB drive with a 2TB and it mirrors
over to that, but now you have 2TB of mirrored storage.

Quite a clever way of doing it, and allows you to increase storage as
bigger drives become available without having to increase the number
    of drives.
