Help! Every time the builders working next door fire up a certain
power tool (I think it's a jigsaw), my power goes off as my RCD trips.
I've spoken to them about it, they blame my system for being faulty. I
spoke to the local Health and Safety at Work people, they told me to
contact my electricity supplier, who didn't answer the phone. I'm sure
I vaguely remember something about being on the same phase of a
3-phase system and faulty tools, but I don't know enough about it to
speak with any authority. I know there are experts here who could
    inform me - please do!

1st thing is have your R.C.D tested properly.

Check the speed of your meter thingie. If it spins faster when they're on
the job (cough) with the errant power tool, turn your juice off, coz they're
    nicking it.

Then make the other buggers answer the phone by leaving it ringing all day.

It's very unlikely to be your RCD that's faulty. Go round with a big cup
of water and accidently spill it on the offending power tool if you
can't get hold of your electrical supplier.

I recently changed a very expensive top of the range RCD because I
couldn't get an electrician I trusted over the weekend. Put in a normal
MCB and lo and behold a faulty socket started smoking. I can assure you
everything is now back on the RCD and everything has been properly
tested by a competent electrician and I'll sit in the dark and cold next
time until it can be tested properly.
