for something as cheap as a couple of memory sticks, I'd be very
tempted to pop over to TCR and stick them on my corporate visa card.

darsy's business tip #325 in a series: "it's easier to get forgiveness
    than permission".

They are the worst gadget ever.

I don't actually object to being in constant email touch with the office,
because I have the self-control to ignore the damn thing when I'm outside
hours. They're just dreadfully designed pieces of kit. Really nasty HCI.
    And they're enormous

Oh for a speedy purchasing system.

The record my place is the 3.5 weeks it took to get my contractor a
laptop... then 2 weeks later some idiot deleted his user ID's, then when
he was recreated HR decided he didn't exist so froze his pay.

I was amazed he stayed another 4 months after that.

    It's true, honest...
This appears to be one of the most disorganised companies I've ever had the
pleasure of working for. The management which seems to change every month
    or so doesn't help matters.

Still not having a laptop means I can't do standby, so its not all bad.

    "They're all like that, sir."
Hey, AndrewR's got a laptop, and he never seems to do any work at all,
    never mind stand-by.

We have 100% of staff on laptops. Encourages flexible working.

we don't have a speedy purchasing system - we have a lot of kit in
stock. That and the fact that since the last re-org, IT is split into 7
"mini-ITs" each with an almost full complement of employee types (from
developers to PMs to DBAs to desktop support people to managers to
business analysts); having my own desktop resource means I have someone
directly working for me who can build and configure PCs, set up
    login/email accounts etc.

So it gets done when it needs to get done.

I think it's a fantastic piece of kit if you want to send emails without
the faf of connecting a laptop to an access mechanism. If you just want
to read emails there are other ways of doing this without needing a
    Blackberry.

Regarding being large, they're a lot smaller than anything else I've
    seen with a qwerty keyboard.

  11. You want to try the public sector. They will allow us to have PDAs etc
but won't allow them to be set up to link to E Mail accounts or
otherwise synchronise with people's main account and their data. That's
after it has taken interminable months to order the damn stuff after
interminable months to convince someone that the request is justified.
We wouldn't recognise a decent IT system if it derailed a train.
Now this idea I really like. I think I shall have to campaign to have
PC's PC department. Seriously though - it does seem very sensible if
it means people are able to work effectively without drowning in
    corporate bureaucracy.

A case of Ruddles, freshly acquired from the Magic Stick by the Billingsgate
Market roundabout, deposited in the boot of my car the next time I'm in
your neck of the woods (which is fairly often, the amount of work we have
going on at Marsh Wall these days)

Now what were you wanting to do with it?

Not half as much of a shocker as your ability to stay on MSN.
