    I've just had my 7kg "laptop" taken away, so I'm now using a sub 1GHz
    duron-based desktop PC.

    My heart fucking bleeds.

    I can't recall there being any mandatory £150 payments? It's simply what
    you see is what you get, no add ons: A PC package including support for
    about £20 or so a month.

    well, it's still a work in progress at the moment, it's really too
    early to say whether the new model is "working". Certainly for the rest
    of my team, they are much freer now to get on with their daily jobs.
    However, this is partly because I have responsibility for a lot of
    administration myself.

    Mostly it's good though - I'm a good deal busier than I'd like, but
    that's mainly due to having not having so-far recruited two key
    positions in my team.

    It's also proved very useful for me that, although my line-manager is
    nominally the business relationship manager for our business-stream in
    Paris, for day-to-day operational purposes I report direct to the head
    of IT in London, effectively meaning I don't have to take any shit from
    anyone in this office...
