I have a friend who thinks he may be interested in joining a trade union. Connect and Prospect are merging into something that might be quite suitable? I've been in Connect for quite a long time. I see Unite have an eagle eye on the main event! www.unitetheunion.com/campaigns/the_miami_five.aspx
When I worked at RR in the early 80s I experienced their ineptitude first hand, which was enough to convince me that I'd never willingliy join a Union again. The computer operations staff, all ASTMS in the closed shop that was common back then, were in dispute over a pay rise agreement and were threatening industrial action. Their immediate management were also part of the ASTMS closed shop, so you'd have thought there might be some common ground. Far from it - when the company decided that they would lock-out all the operators, their immediate superiors all stepped into the breach to maintain the 24-hour service we maintained at theat time. After a couple of months they all caved in and agreed to a lower pat settlement. Lower, that is, than the previous offer they'd rejected. There was another dispute a few years later when I was part of said computer ops staff, where the union rejected an offer, then after protracted talks over three or four months finally accepted, once again, a lwer offer than that first tabled. Unions, I thought? **** 'em. Useless bunch of cunts.

Probably the same... http://www.unitetheunion.com/sectors.aspx The only reason I know this is a lot of people at work have suddenly joined up because of the scrapping of the final salary pensions. Same kind of concerns and membership at Fujitsu and EDS, from what I can gather.
Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Hog Yes, my friend saw that. "That's nice", he thought. "They must have solved all their members' problems". Then he read the writings of Tony Woodley, and thought "**** that". He has decided to hire a decent lawyer if push comes to shove. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - "He's hopeless, but he's honest" I have already made the greatest contribution to the fight against climate change that I can make: I have decided not to breed. FFS! It reads like it's come directly out of the mouth of Fidel Castro. Ramblings, more like it. The man must be deranged.
Someone recently suggested to me, that if push came to shove, to check your house contents policy as the legal cover on that is likely to cover employment issues.
