FOAK Jukebox apps?

I've built a little "Media centre" to hold most of my meagre music
collection and sent the tape machines and gramophone to the loft.
Although Windoze media player works ok, can the Fount recommend a Juke Box
    type app that is better?
Free would be an advantage, but I don't mind paying for the "right" app.

    TIA.

    Assuming Windows: Winamp, or XBMC.

If you want something that works with a remote control, MediaPortal's
    really good for music.

    Yep it does.
I've never done any serious streaming such, but I'll certainly take not.

    Taa.

Now that sounds like a good idea.

    Never thought of remote controlling!

  9. This works for me: http://tinyurl.com/83bp2f

Also works with Rhythmbox. I just plug the netbook into my amp.

I can second this - also if you have a TV dongle/card, it'll work with
this. You can also use a remote control (The Hauppage remote that
came with the dongle works quite well for me). In fact Mediaportal is
100x better than the WinTV piece of shit that came with the TV dongle.

    Your loss.

Well, that's a bit of a bold statement.

IM(limited)E of iTunes, I found it a bit bloated to say the least. If
you have a very large collection of music on your network and don't want
to duplicate it into iTunes local db, it can get quite slow too.

On windows? Granted it's free, but it's bloated and slow.

    This I agree with
    This I don't.

Winamp is a much nicer app, supports ipod sync and transcoding to
different bitrates, and is less bloated.

Wow, it's been years since I used winamp. I'll have to have a look at
    that, ta.

    Thank you.

    *sigh*

    You're using Windows, right?

  18. The first two I agree with (on Windows anyway) but the latter? I've
installed it on my windows box recently and it didn't ask to install
anything else (and certainly not malware!).
