Completely OT but you never know

It would seem my just out of warranty leather armchair from DFS [1] is
hell bent on self destructing and the faulty leather is falling apart.
Ultimately it's going to be a new chair but for the time being while I
argue the toss with them I'd like to put something over the rips -
SWMBO has vetoed the nice silver duct tape, so question is, are there
any recommendations for specialist coloured (dark brown) tapes for this
    kind of thing?

How long's the warranty? Remember that just out of DFS warranty <> just
out of SOGA warranty, & attempting any repair yourself may invalidate a
    claim.

Get it repaired by a local upholsterer. Normal tape will simly peel
away. If it's strong enough to stick to the leather, it will lift the
top coating when you remove it.

    ^ Wot 'ee said.

Throw it at 'em, with force.

A leather armchair that falls apart just outside (1 year?) warranty is
not "merchantable quality". After 6 months, it's down to you to prove it
was a bag of shite when it was new, rather than them to prove it wasn't,
but that sounds like it'd be easy.

Not worried about that as they've seen it and it's completely borked so
until I either get it sorted with DFS [1] or get a new chair I'd like
to tape up the tears as a temporary measure.

Does anything like this exists or shall I go for the black gaaffa tape
    option??

It would. The DFS receipt would be enough.

I remember buying a splendid, if slightly foxed, old horsehair sofa
from a junk shop, when we were first parried. Cost £70, which seemed a
    fortune in the early 1980s.

About 15 years ago, decided to get it renovated as it was starting to
leak bits of horsehair, and creaked alarmingly. Oh, and get a proper
decent folding sofa bed we'd bought covered in the same fabric.

It cost £1200 for the two, of which something like £900 went on
restoring the sofa. When we blanched at the price, the restorer said:
"Yes, but this is a really, *really* good quality solid oak frame
Victorian sofa. If you want something of similar quality, new, you're
    looking at £2000-3000..."

Like Antiques Roadshow, it was, especially when we told him it had
cost us £70 and his eyebrows lifted off.

As it had lasted the better part of a century before it needed
renovation, I guess it must have been a decent one. We still have it.

Cheap furniture is just crap. I'd rather buy decent used quality stuff
    than spanking new crap.

Not always true. We bought two 2-seater sofas and a chair, all
leather, from one of the cheapy shops, I think it was DFS actually,
who wouldn't give a discount but did interest-free credit and nothing
to pay for a year... cost about £1700 overall, IIRC.

Anyway, that would have been about 15 years ago, perhaps 12, but
they're still going strong, and are dead comfy.

Of maybe 1700 notes isn't cheap by your standards - certainly seemed
    that way to me.

    I've bought 5 cheap-ish sofas from M&S over the past 20 years. I still
have and use all but one of them (one of the oldest gave up the ghost
age 18, after too much abuse/spillages by the kids.

My leather sofas cost £300 for a pair from Argos 5 years ago. Still
going strong despite the best efforts of the cats. If they fell apart
now, I wouldn't have any objections to getting the same ones again.

Out of manufacturers warranty doesn't mean that they have a duty under
the sale of goods act that the item is fit for purpose

If you bought an armchair which cost a fair amount of money, you would
expect that armchair to last a reasonable length of time. Fit for
purpose runs UP TO six years

Do some googling of SOGA and Martins moneysaving expert forums
