I'm more satisfied with my Nokia N73 than with any phone I've had in the past.
It's nearly two years old. But finally the overall speed of the menus has
driven me mad and I want rid.

    Criteria:
o Preferably Nokia as all my contacts are in Nokia PC Suite.
o Good camera for casual use - the N73's was good enough to make me sell my
    digital camera.
o I don't want an upgrade from the network as I don't want to sign a contract.
o 3G would be nice, as would IMAP and web browsing.
o Reasonable price from http://www.cex.co.uk/ who I expect to give me £63 for
    my N73.

N96 should be out soon if you can hang on.

If you sync your contacts with a SyncML service like www.zyb.com (free
service) you can get your new phone and sync your contacts with it in
    seconds.

Great, play.com have them for only £599.99. I think you missed my last bullet
point. Perhaps I should also have added:
o Doesn't need to be the latest thing, and probably shouldn't for cost
    reasons.

I actually run a SyncML server, so I guess the Nokia requirement is easily
forgettable. What's the user interface like, especially the speed?

  8. Big icons, 12 to a screen, speed is good. Will take getting used to if
you're used to Nokias but having owned many models from both
manufactures, including some N series phones, I'll stay with the Sonys.
The K850i is also free on most tariffs (on O2 anyway).

Me is extremely happy with N95 8GB for most of the criteria above (bought
    from Dagofone).

Even use it as a movie player connected to TV when going on week-end to
Chateau Domenec and can't be arsed to burn a DVD.

I pondered the N95. I just had a go on a friends, and the menus especially
SMS are faster than the N73, but still slower than I feel they should be.
What cunts designed this software? Do you know if the Sony menus are any
faster? If I'm going to go to the trouble of changing a phone, I might as
    well get it right.

I've got a standard N95, and the menus don't seem particularly slow to
me. Has your friend got the latest firmware from Nokia? I de-branded
mine so I could easily get the latest, rather than waiting months and
months for my service provider to pull their finger out.

  13. If you make more than 3 phone calls a week, avoid. The battery life is
    truly shit.
Go to a fucking phone shop and test one out you lazy git.

    (snip)
You upgraded your N73's firmware? Usually there are lots of improvements
such as speed and RAM efficiency. Recently Demand Paging support was
added to the firmware for the N95 for example.
And my N95 was quoted as £500 but I got mine for free. Who buys just the
handset only? Anyway if you're just annoyed with the speed I'd suggest
you upgrade to the latest firmware — if you haven't already.

They're smart phones not phones. Ergo the same as your computer. How
many fsking updates do you need to make to your PC each week? Well it's
the same now with phones. If you don't like that, just buy a bullet
proof feature-short old-school phone (if you can find one!).

The good thing with the N95 is that you can also make free phone calls
whilst abroad if you have access to a wifi connection. Don't recall if
the N73 has wifi and SIP ?

With the latest firmware you now get two days instead of one. Not great
but a lot better than one!

Yep, it's debranded. I certainly find the menus to be less responsive than
they were in the old days (pre-Symbian).

Yep, I did that. Main obvious change is that the camera now takes much worse
    pictures.
I'm hardly going to get a free one without a new contract, am I?

What's your point? That it's acceptable to have slower, bug-ridden firmware
because it has more features? Nokia have used the public as beta-testers for
    years.
Nope. But I hear that and it's /very/ interesting.
