Mine went faster but broke a couple of other things; I'm waiting for a
new version of the firmware myself.
I got mine free on upgrade. OK you are going to be tied in for a year
whether it's an upgrade or a new contract with a new supplier but that's
only bad if you don't think you will want to stay with them for a year.

A contract is a contract. Perhaps my OP wasn't clear, I don't want to sign
    any contract, upgrade or otherwise.

My point is that the software will improve in an iterative cycle. You
just won't get perfect software out of the box. It's because it's much
much more sophisticated and feature rich than non-Symbian OSs. More
features = more code. more code = more scope for bugs. In fact everytime
they release new firmware they usually give you new apps. New apps will
certainly have new bugs. It's just something you have to accept. Or use
something so basic it's been tested to death and is unbreakable like one
of those old Nokias that had Snake in three different shades of green (I
got 999 on that once, seems it was the highest you could get).
I signed up with www.sipgate.co.uk and now I can make calls all over the
world at the same rate regardless of my location (because you're just
paying for the local calls in the destination country, which varies from
free to perhaps 14ppm). All you need is a wifi connection. And
receiving calls is FREE :) !

Shouldn't really limit you that much since you can get an N95 — say — on
    ebay for a ton.

No, it's because it isn't tested well enough.
There are enough bugs in modern phones[1] that I have reason to believe that
testing isn't up to scratch. I mean, the camera bug in the new N73 firmware?
It's not rocket science. Basically, they release shit, they /know/ that they
release shit, and they /know/ that people will still buy it as they like shiny
    new stuff.
I have an account with someone, Diamondcard ISTR. I'll have to dig out the
details. Cex want £220 for an unlocked N95, that could be doable if I trade
in the N73 and an old PC I'm about to take down there.

[1] Nokias anyway. Long time since I've used something else.

Ah yes. Cex look rather expensive, hence can go **** themselves.

Bad form - I see that the 8GB goes for more than that, but it's not something
I care about - I'm quite happy to use my existing 1GB microSD in a "standard"
N95. By the time I need 8GB on a phone, I'm sure 8GB cards will be suitably
    cheap.

I got one of the first batch into the country. Cost me £55! I managed to
put 8GB of music on there in no time. However if you use the built in
GPS and Nokia Maps software (you get a free 3-day trial) you should
really use the card to pre-load maps if you're going abroad. That way
you'll save yourself huge data-charges (which can be circumvented if you
have free wi-fi access whilst abroad).

Well I found loads of bugs in the software on my old Razor phone. It
even had a ridiculous bug in it whereby it wouldn't warn you about
self-signed digital certificates making it a piece of piss to imitate
"secure" sites. Meh. I reported it to Motorola but they couldn't give a
    shit.
Maybe. I know I certainly have better things to be doing with my time
than flashing my phone every week. :)

Hmmm, that's a point: I should really sort out how to do that before we
    go on holiday.

Perhaps you use it more than me? If you start using the camera or some
functions like Maps it drinks juice like noones business. I've noticed
that with the latest firmware it will show four bars and you make a call
and then it shows one and gives a battery low warning! c*nt!

thanks for that, Eddie. it would help if any of it made sense!

Heh... I didn't think it was that bad!
Sure, no problem. But we'll have to find somewhere with free wi-fi to do
    it properly.

If you're on T-Mobile and you use Web n Walk Plus you get free access of
theirs and BT's hotspots. I've not tried to see if they block the SIP
protocol yet but if they don't then wohoo.
