Lots of rave reviews from people that seem to sit by the pool all day and
never leave the grounds of the hotel. Those that venture to the beach
appear to get pissed off with sellers and general pestering. I was
wondering if it's a mild nuisance that soon goes away, or a real PITA? I
want to be out playing in the sea and don't want to have to worry about
people pestering the misses all day.

    Advice from the font?

Years[1] since I was there, but the beaches were not particularly
appealing, either in the overall appearance, their clenliness, or the
uncontrolled pedlars-of-shite. Most hotels have pools right next to
the beachfront anyway, so excursions into the sea shouldn't involve
the need to spend any time on the beach per se.

[1] 20+, so of course ift might all be different these days.

  3. Lived in Malindi down the coast as a sprog, and all I can remember
about that was huge long deserted white sandy beaches.

Again - in Ace mode - that was 20+ years ago as well.

I spent a few days in Malindi 40+ years ago, and can remember the sea
being rough, green, cold and full of seaweed.

I had a wonderful holiday there at an hotel on Bamburi beach. The beach
vendors were a pain in the arse, although on the second week when you looked
less "white" and more "pink" they troubled you less.

We went one day to a hotel with a private beach and it was lovely, total
    solitude and peace.

I found the ocean temps to be very high and dived with Barracuda diving,
lovely dive sites with lots of big sealife, sharks, morays, turtles,
    dolphins etc.

In the evenings the beach vendors are replaced by hookers. I used to take a
couple of beers down to the security guards and have a drink and a cigarette
with them and would be pestered by the whores. There is nothing on earth
that would've encouraged me to take up their offers but the banter was
    amusing :)

Oh and take a box of cheap biros with you, you can bargain for all sorts
    with cheap pens :)
