I've got a big new SATA drive, and no machine to currently fit it in.
I could obviously get a USB case for it, but as I'd like it to be
accessible from multiple machines, I thought I'd look at hanging it
    off the network.

A quick google found this: http://www.mediacase.co.uk/ which seems to
fit the bill. Can anyone suggest anything else, or give any other
    advice?

If you leave any boxes on 24/7, I'd go the USB route & share it.
Otherwise NAS is good, but FAT32 means max 4gb file size (although the
magic smoke in the box should take bigger files & split them up).

I'm trying to avoid that, for the sake of my leccy bill. And the one
in the link has a configurable 'spin down on inactivity' feature.
The one listed has such magic smoke, too.

  4. Well, everyone knows what route I went down. It was painful, but everyone
has said that was because I'm stupid and don't know enough about samba
etc. But now, I have a networked (always on) 500GB hard drive and a
networked printer that all networked machines can see. It works perfectly.

Next job is get the web-based bittorrent client working (24 hour
    downloads at hardly any watts).

Looks interesting - I've been looking for a similar device. Some of the
cheap ones don't seem to have CIFS support, which I want for hooking up a
Linux box, but that one appears to.

I was pretty close to buying the QNAP TS-109, which darsy also has. It
has a whole bundle of features, including the ability to plug in a printer
and turn the device into a print server too. However, it costs
    considerably more.

For your requirements, it's probably bob on.

I've emailed them asking if the can give me an idea as to how noisy it
might be. Assuming it doesn't run a big noisy fan, I'll get one.

I'm less arsed about a bit of noise and I had some money in my paypal
account. I should be able to let you know first hand about it in a day
or two if you're prepared to wait that long.

  8. Our youngest visited and slept in the same room as the slug. She switched
it off in the middle of the night "because it was keeping her awake". It
is *totally* silent. The external disk that's hung off it, well that's
audible if I switch the fridge off in the kitchen.
