And Dell have probably just lost my custom, seeing as they won't
deliver to anywhere other than the registered address of the
credit/debit card, which is a right royal PITA.

Oh well, PC World here I come...

Oh yeah, I know that. It is a PITA though.

However, it is now all sorted, so at the moment, I'd like to nominate
Dell Customer Service as being quite reasonable and helpful.

It should turn up (at work, no less!) within a week.

Not IME. I've had quite a few things delivered to our French address,
and once to a US colleague's, using my Swiss-registered cards. And
these from US, UK, French and Swiss suppliers. Anyone that can't give
you two forms for billing address and delivery address needs their
    systems and processes urgently reviewing.

No it isn't, for business cards at least, and it can be an utter PITFA

I guess what this indicates is that Dell was losing significant money
shipping laptops out to people who had stolen credit card details.

Which isn't entirely surprising: if you're a criminal trying to convert
credit card details into hard cash then I would expect a laptop is a
    highly useful intermediate step.

Most places I've used seem to insist on the first order going to the
registered address, after that it seems east enough to add alternates
    to the account.

We've just had a Dell purchase wrongly charged to our CC. Thankfully
Barclaycard were on the ball and spotted it long before we did.

my sister has just received a Nokia Smartphone on contract with Vodafone.
The contract is in her full name at her home address. The direct debit is
to a Lloyds TSB account at a branch in Surrey. My sister has never lived in
Surrey or banked with Lloyds TSB. A check with Experian shows no credit
check in her name. Go figure...

It turned up yesterday afternoon, and it's looking good so far. Time
will tell as I start using it a bit more whilst re-installing all my
    stuff.
